Aha - Highs & Lows

Hello peeps. I have recently between 1&2 months ago increased my levothyroxine from 75mg to 100mg.Thing is I've started having days where I'm extremely high and very excitable (euphoric) followed by very low days (feel sad & tearful) and exhaustion.

The low mood days take me by surprise almost and it's upsetting.

I seem to be having trouble getting to sleep too and this results in me sleeping longer.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated as this is one emotional roller coaster.

Perhaps it was too much to increase by, it doesn't have to be 25mcg. Maybe try just 12.5 instead. What dose tablet(s) have you got?

Hi, yes it was increased by 25mg from 75 to 100.Thing is when I was in 75mg I was feeling out of sorts then too, not everyday but I'd feel low and it would be out of the blue.

So I requested a test from gp, took advice from this forum and fasted etc. Results came back that I was in need of more so they increased by 25 to 100.

Currently have 100mg tablets.Previously had 50+25mg tablets and still have some left.

Are you suggesting I try and cut a 25mg tablet in half.. or are 12.5mg tablets available?

If you have some 25mcg tablets and you got on OK with that brand, then cut them in half. I think there is one brand of 12.5mcg but it is very expensive and doubtful that any GP would want to prescribe them.

how long since you increased

Get blood retested 6/8 weeks after any dose change

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Totoro25 profile image
Totoro25 in reply to SlowDragon

Bloods retested after 8 weeks that was 2 weeks ago and I've not heard from gp which indicates things are now good apparently 🤷‍♂️Vitamins I take are as follows

Sealions

Vit B complex

Vit D3 1000IU

ALWAYS get actual results and ranges

You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.

The best way to get access to current and historic blood test results is to register for online access to your medical record and blood test results

UK GP practices are supposed to offer everyone online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.

Link re access

patients-association.org.uk...

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

In reality some GP surgeries still do not have blood test results online yet

Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.

Just testing TSH and Ft4 is completely inadequate

You need to retest folate, ferritin and B12 at least annually

Test vitamin D twice a year

Remember to stop taking vitamin B complex 5-7 days before ALL Blood tests as Biotin in vitamin B complex as biotin can falsely affect test result

Multivitamins never recommended on here for anyone on levothyroxine as most likely contains iodine and shouldn’t take unless tested and deficient

Also Shouldn’t take iron supplements unless tested and deficient

Hi SlowDragon,Wow! That's a lot of information and it's much appreciated.

I will attempt to get online access to my results.

I did present my GP with my list as suggested here prior to my blood test and she categorically told me Vit D wasn't tested here in Scotland as it was assumed everyone would be getting enough from food additives or be taking a supplement.

I must check my multi vitamins and also my for Iron & iodine.

Thanks for the heads up on Vitamin B too.

My surgery really don't appear to be very switched on with regards to Thyroid although my new and current GP seems open to chatting about it etc.

Okay so I have just read info on my multi vitamins

Iron = 2.1mg

Iodine = 100ug

Thanks again 👍

So stop multivitamins

Test vitamin levels

Thousands upon thousands of U.K. thyroid patients forced to test privately to make progress

Unlikely vitamin D at 1000iu is high enough dose

Looking for vitamin D at least over 80nmol minimum

Between 100-125nmol may be better

Thank you once again. So I have checked out Blue Horizon and I'm guessing that a Gold or Platinum test would suffice ?

So what is the advice leading up to taking the test with regard to fasting or cutting out Vitamins?

You mentioned the B Vits already.

As I previously worked at the local hospital I may get them to draw blood if I choose the Platinum as finger prick method isn't accepted.

Stop multivitamins now

Retest after 2-6 weeks

Stop vitamin B complex 5-7 days before test

Stop anything else day before test

Do you Always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

ALWAYS Test early morning, ideally just before 9am , only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

As per my previous reply above including all relevant links

Cheapest is usually Medichecks

medichecks.com/products/adv...

But check money off codes via Thyroid U.K.

BH test premium gold is one recommended

Hello again.. I can't thank you enough it's all appreciated.

I think it will be BH and yes I checked using the link and there is currently a 30% discount code available for them.

However I will check again after my

Vitamins free period is up prior to testing again.

You have all been so helpful and it's hard to believe that my GP has never ever brought any of these points up. 🤔

😁

You can read profiles of many regular posters/members

you will see current understanding and treatment of thyroid conditions is woefully inadequate ….hence this is by far the busiest forum with over 132,000 members

First step is ALWAYS to get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done

Come back with results once you have them

When you say full thyroid and vitamin test I'm guessing you're referring to a private lab or something? As my GPs will not entertain me telling them what's required.

Regenallotment profile image
Regenallotment in reply to Totoro25

Yes it would be private testing. Sadly we have to do it ourselves if we want it all done regularly.

Shop around as some are more expensive than others. SD has given you links to all the main sites we all use. Very reliable.

I haven’t used Blue Horizon, I alternate between Medichecks and monitor my health depending on what needs testing.

Ensure you try thyroiduk10 for offer code and also if Medichecks sign up for newsletters they regularly have 20% off and you can hold onto the test kit for months x
