Far better to test B12 - Folate - Ferritin and VitD and take it from there ... Post results with ranges in a new post when you have them. Multi-vits can cause all sorts of problems ...

No, it's never ok to take multi-vits. They are a waste of money.

* If your multi contains iron, it will block the absorption of all the vitamins - you won't absorb a single one! Iron should be taken at least two hours away from any other supplement except vit C, which is necessary to aid absorption of iron, and protect the stomach.

* If your multi also contains calcium, the iron and calcium will bind together and you won't be able to absorb either of them.

* Multi's often contain things you shouldn't take or don't need : calcium, iodine, copper. These things should be tested before supplementing.

* Multi's often contain the cheapest, least absorbable form of the supplement : magnesium oxide, instead of magnesium citrate or one of the other good forms; cyanocobalamin instead of methylcobalamin; folic acid instead of methylfolate; etc. etc. etc.

* Multi's do not contain enough of anything to help a true deficiency, even if you could absorb them.

* When taking several supplements, you should start them individually at two weekly intervals, not all at once as you would with a multi. Because, if you start them all at once, and something doesn't agree with you, you won't know which one it is and you'll be back to square one.

With a multivitamin, you are just throwing your money down the drain, at best, and doing actual harm at worst. Far better to get tested for vit D, vit B12, folate and ferritin, and build up your supplementation program based on the results. A vitamin or a mineral is only going to help you if you need it, anyway. More of something you don’t need is either pointless or even dangerous, as with calcium, iron or vit D. :)

My daughter has low iron and is taking multi-vitamins and I have told she needs to take iron on its own. As usual children never listen to their parents and she has ignored me. She also has a TSH of 2.40 and is struggling to lose weight after giving birth 2 years ago and I know she is getting thyroid disease like me but she ignores what I say so I will just have to watch her get more and more ill like I did .....

My daughter is the same. Won't listen to anything I say, and if I try to insist, gets hostile! There's not much you can do, it has to come from them, I'm afraid.

I know but I listen to her hoarse voice which she had tests on and they said she had nodules on her vocal cords and know it is her thyroid but what can I do? She gets angry and says I am obsessed with thyroid disease and I think everyone has got it which is so untrue.

Yup, I get exactly the same. She says I'm obsessed and I want her to have it! How could anyone possibly think that? So, I rarely mention it now.

Same with my brother. Oh, you'll laugh when I tell you what he said the other day! lol I was saying how tired I am at the moment - taking a long time to get over Christmas. And he said, oh, perhaps you have some sort of hormonal imbalance!!!!!!!! Ha! Just goes to show how much he's taken in over the past twenty years! None of them really get it, even if they make sympathetic noises, they don't understand.

I don't want her to have it but I know it can run in families. I am sad she is getting it at 33 when I didn't show signs until my late 40s. I just hope she will let me help when she does become very ill which I know will happen eventually.

Hopefully, she'll be more receptive once she finds out you were right.

I have been doing but let it slip of late. I’m trying it to see if it improves help alongside going to the gym etc.

As long as iodine isn’t in it as over here in the UK they do not recommend iodine and levo together. I use wellwoman as centrum contains iodine

Still contains iron, so you won't be absorbing any of the vitamins because the iron will block them.

No-one should take iodine unless they've been tested and found deficient. And then only take it under the supervision of an experienced practitioner. Iodine can have some very undesorabme side-effects.

She is a very clever woman and won't listen and thinks she knows best. I am just waiting until she asks for my help and then hopefully she will start treatment.
