Hypothyroidism and bamboo extract

Has anyone here with hypothyroidism taken a bamboo extract supplement? Did it cause issues with your thyroid function or interfere with your Synthroid medication.?

I have been taking it for a few months and just learned via internet that it may pose an issue with those that are hypothyroid.

Please advise if you have any experience regarding taking bamboo extract while taking thyroid medication. I am using it to try and thicken my hair. I discontinued taking it on yesterday once i learned it may be dangerous. Thanks for your help!

This paper highlights issues with bamboo shoots - but there are several other forms of bamboo extract which might have very different effects:

Bamboo Shoots. Consumption of bamboo shoots contributes to the development of endemic goiter. Cyanogenic glycosides present in bamboo shoots are metabolized to toxic thiocyanate. Additionally, the in vitro study of Sarkar et al., showed that cyanogenic constituents in bamboo shoots generate reactive oxidative species that contribute to oxidative DNA damage and cell cycle disruption. This is followed by the inhibition of regulatory elements that synthesize thyroid hormones.

Why don't Pandas eat meat?

The draft genome sequence of the giant panda shows that its umami taste receptor gene Tas1r1 is a pseudogene, prompting the proposal that the loss of the umami perception explains why the giant panda is herbivorous.
