What could be the reason behind Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis in a teen girl and a teen boy of the same family even though none of the other members have the condition?

Hashimotos often runs in families, as do other auto immune conditions. I’m the only member of my family with a thyroid condition, but other members have other auto immune diagnoses.

Curious why you ask…I guess you are not referring to yourself, as your profile states you are 21 years old.

I’m indeed referring to myself. I was diagnosed with it when I was a teen and so did my brother. My brother also recently got his thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer. None of my other family members have any auto immune diagnosis.

I hope your brother is doing well after his surgery.

I couldn’t believe that I was the only one in my family with thyroid issues…. but recently I did see a photo of a great- great grandmother with what looked like a goitre, so it could skip a couple of generations.

That makes more sense. Thank you!

If I go back through my uncles and aunts and cousins we have a few with psoriasis, some colitis, an aunt with a thyroidectomy you might find a few back up the family tree, I was surprised by how many conditions are autoimmune. It’s a long list. 🌱
