I've just had an colonoscopy today 12 o'clock, I asked for sedation as my son is here👍 everything normal nurse pleasent, does my cannula, down I go nurse gives my the gas n air tube, then the specialist proceeds to administer the sedation it squirts out hitting the nurse and myself, they just laugh, he tries again but again it squirts out, I have no stinging sensation or feel any liquid entering my arm. He looks at it and remarks there's something wrong with this cannula tries again but nothing, I don't feel drowsy or woozy.

He just continues on with the procedure, the nurse hands me the gas n air and tells me to take deep breaths... OK I've had this procedure 3 times so I know the score, had gas n air in child birth to so I know how to use it.

He plods on with the camera the pain is intense way worse than the last 3 times I've had this procedure , I start to breathe irratic because of the intense pain, he then says in a angry tone "if you don't stop breathing like that I can't do the procedure, I explained as best I can it's very painful and I've had sedation, why is it so painful!!

He proceeds to push some more sedation into me, again it squirts out down my arm, but he continues with the process, I'm now crying.. Never done this before... Ever!! He again scolds me.. So I let go of the gas n air a tell him it hurts so bad 😠he mumbles something and I say "don't patronise me" 😂 when you've done I'll tell you why it's hurting.

He never comes to see me after the procedure, and sends a nurse in who wasn't even in the room.. And she says so!! COWARD!! I feel the cannula was not in correctly because when she took the top off no blood came out and I didn't see a flash back in the tube either 🤦‍♀️.

I'm bloody traumatised, 😱my bowles are in pain still 😠 be having some nice nightmares tonight I can bet it.

Anyway I've fired of an e mail complaining about the treatment I received today... Bloody nhs😠

I can empathise and sympathise. I once had a sigmoidoscopy without sedation or gas and air. I also have a history of left-sided ovarian torsion in my teens which wasn't discovered for a month, and I've had lots of other gynae surgery apart from that. My abdomen is jam-packed with scarring and adhesions. That sigmoidoscopy was torture. I can't imagine how bad colonoscopy would have been under the same circumstances.

For those who don't know... Sigmoidoscopy is like a short colonoscopy. It only looks at the bowel on the left hand side of the body, it doesn't go all the way round to the appendix region.

Hysteroscopy is done without anaesthetic or sedation too and for that they use what is called a "vocal local" i.e. a nurse stands and talks to you through the procedure to distract you from the pain. Then they always say in notes (if they write any) "the procedure was well tolerated". This is despite the fact that a lot of women vomit and scream and faint during it.

Doctors simply don't care if they torture women. And they do this because so many women need these procedures and it is a lot cheaper to torture the patient than allow them to have it with sedation or anaesthetic.

After my sigmoidoscopy failed to find the cause of the problem I had, a year later a hospital consultant suggested repeating it. I asked if I could have sedation or GA. And her response was "There are no circumstances whatsoever in which a sigmoidoscopy would ever be done with an anaesthetic" and all this was said while I was being glowered at. You know... because I was obviously drug seeking. (sarcasm). I refused to repeat the sigmoidoscopy.

Sorry you have both had such an awful time. I have recently had colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy , both with sedation. Doctors and staff were fortunately very kind in both cases. The cannula should be tested and if necessary redone before proceding.

I'm very use to this procedure I've had 3 all went well except this one, I'm already in pain in my bowels having bad cramps and diarrhoea sure it's the thyroid medication doing it.

I've had plenty of canulars to and I'm very sure she missed my vein, everytime I've had one when they pull out the long plastic thingy you always get a bit of blood come out, I had nothing.

The very fact the sedation liquid squerted out 4 times should have warrented the procedure to be halted until it was rectified.

No that would have cocked his schedule up, let's just have her in immense pain, I've never cried like that from any procedure I've had done, 😢 just found this man to be condescending and rude, and it showed, he couldn't care less as he never showed his face afterwards, not even to ask if I was OK 😔 good god I've never had any fear of anything 🤷‍♀️I've ever needed done.. Full thyroidectomy, hysterectomy, knee operation, camera up and down... But now I think I will be having panic attacks if I have that done again 😠😠

What a nightmare that must have been for you, but I certainly feel your pain 😖 it's angered me as I've had 3 of these procedures and none were as bad as this one, the reason I asked for sedation was because I'm already having bowle pain and I'm sure it's the thyroid medication I'm taking that's causing it.

It was the utter lack of care with the cannula, he definitely knew something was wrong with it, but he pushed on anyway, and yes I got a lady holding my hand trying to detract me from the pain, fat lot of good that was I'm afraid I squeezed her hand hard because she pulled it away😂.

The procedure for sedation failed but they never bothered to rectify it, just shows you there's no compassion, we're treated like cattle, get them in do the procedure get them out 😠 his attitude was appalling.. I Trully wanted to hold him down and stick that camera as far up his jaxy as it would go🖕it's definitely scared me from ever having this again.

I had the camera down the stomach 2 weeks ago sedation worked perfectly 👍 this clown is obviously a bad specialist 😠🤡

I'm not surprised you are angry. I would be too in the same circumstances.

I don't know if it is still true but hospitals used to get bonuses if they did procedures without anaesthesia or sedation that, in a compassionate society would be done with anaesthesia or sedation.

The fact that stuff squirted out of the cannula and the surgeon repeated it several times is just an example of that quote often attributed to Einstein :

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

So sorry you had such an awful experience today. I felt violated and unheard in a similar gynae experience last year. Nurse came out and gave me a hug after. What is it about women and invasive procedures and pain… makes me very ranty.
