tsh how hig can it go
I don’t know about age range but mine swung from 0.1 to 36 in March! 36 was a shock, didn’t realise it could go that high.
TSH of 14 is too high for anyone , of whatever age,
it should be within the reference range, and most TSH ranges are aprox 0.4 - 4.5 (ish)
but yes .....TSH can go much higher , up to 100 or even higher.
Anyone with TSH of 14 needs to see their Doctor about it urgently .
Generally test have limit - up to >100 for example.
It’s possible someone can function better than someone with lower or in range TSH as TSH isn’t responsible for symptoms It where the FT4 & FT3 is.
Over 10 is considered overtly hypothyroid
Anyone with TSH over 10 is hypothyroid
She needs second test including thyroid antibodies and vitamins
Low vitamin levels very common as we get older
Starting on 25mcg levothyroxine initially if over 65mcg
Dose levothyroxine is increased slowly upwards over 6-12 months until TSH always below 2 and symptoms resolved
Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine
For full Thyroid evaluation she needs TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested
Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once
Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum
About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies
Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s
Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.
Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.
Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)
20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis
In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)
Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Despite my TSH being 100 - the GP told me that I had no problems. He obviously did not know or take any notice of symptoms. I cried as I didn't know what to do to alleviate symptoms or the reason for them.
Thanks to Thyroiduk I learned about a dysfunctional thyroid gland and the symptoms we could develop and slowly, slowly improved health.
I was fortunate to consult the last two of the 'old-school doctors' i.e. Dr Barry Peatfield and Dr Gordon Skinner and people travelled from all over the UK to consult with them - they are now deceased.
We haveThyroiduk.org and Lyn Mynott is the person who started it which has enabled many thousands to recover their health. Members who've been helped can also become members of Thyroiduk as the more members the stronger TUK's voice.
A TSH above 2.5 and you’ll have Hypo symptoms. When I was first diagnosed mine was 36! It shouldn’t be higher than 2.5 and preferably around 1.00 when on correct doses of medication/s. A healthy persons TSH is normally 1-2 To get to your personal sweet spot you need to be on levothyroxine T4 medication. If that doesn’t feel better then test TSH , T4 and T3 levels to check if you are converting T4 to the most important hormone T3. Also check vitamin levels B12, D, folate and ferritin. Vitamins are often low for people living with thyroid conditions.
It can take time finding your right levels.
when I was in my early 40’s my number was 9. I’m presuming it was my tsh as that’s the usual test. Nothing was done until my mid 50’s when my tsh was over 100. I had been back and forward for years and especially in the last 6months. My symptoms were ignored even though I’d put on nearly 3stones Jo xx
