F 26 undiagnosed sickness on and off for 4 months - night sweats, sore throat, diarrhoea, general fatigue, oral thrush

I have been getting sick on and off since December. I work as a primary school teacher so exposure to viruses is the norm but this has been really excessive. I've been diagnosed with a suspected respitory infection and then suspected nuro virus. A week ago I was diagnosed with oral thrush which I am now receiving treatment for. My sore throat is particularly bad in the mornings and at night I've had general blood work done (red and white blood cells, thyroid, liver and kidney function etc) and they have all come back normal. The doctor is now suggesting further testing. I would appreciate any ideas / help as I am exhausted from living like this and the doctors are not putting anything together. For further context, I am underweight- I always have been after being born prematurely - weighing 49.5kg and i'm 5 ft 8. I also struggle generally with very cold extremities.

Welcome to thyroid forum

The TSH & FT4 look very healthy, but if you wanted to be certain you’d need thyroid antibody’s & FT3 tested.

FT3 is the active powerful hormone but it’s considered the last thyroid biomarker to change & therefore not included when screening for thyroid issues.

Do you get thirsty?  Oral thrush this is often common with high blood sugar.  Has you doctor tested HBA1c? This shows average blood sugar for passed few months.

You might make faster progress to arrange a full private test.  Including TSH FT4 & FT3.  thyroid antibodies & key nutrients (folate, ferritin,  B12 & vitamin D).

You order a kit online & it’s posted to you to take sample can be taken via finger prick (extra fee for venous draw at home or clinic).

Different companies offer different options & level of testing. Medicheck advanced option good & include biomarkers mentioned & CRP an inflammation marker.

Monitor my health offer option with HBA1c but not TG antibodies.

See link to list of companies & discount codes.

this sounds soooo familiar! I had a virus in December and never fully recovered! The fatigue is so debilitating!! I also have ulcers in throat, palpitations/chest pain, facial numbness on one side… blood test have all come back normal, waiting for 24hr ecg results and neurology consultant this week… symptoms all seem so random and across different bodily systems.. someone recently suggested pharyngeal herpes which can apparently affect lungs/blood etc I’m at a loss!!

what about mold in your home? You say you feel worse morning and night when you are home. Just a consideration that most doctors won’t think about. Good luck. You can try some herbs till you find the issue.

ESSENTIAL to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 too as well as full thyroid tests

Night sweats often low B12

Weight loss or inability to maintain weight…..gluten intolerance……extremely common with autoimmune thyroid disease

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Night sweats can also be a sign of a dairy allergy.
