Throids and x-rays and/or CT scans

Hi,

Is there any information out there on the effect on the Thyroid of someone with Hashimotos. I've suddenly become symptomatic again after having several done. Of course it could just be a coincidence but I've been reasonably stable for two years now. Going to order a Medichecks test Thursday to see what that reveals

Thanks

Was a contrast dye used in the CT scan, if so was iodine used?

I've had x-rays and a couple of CT scans without contrast dye in the past and it hasn't affected anything (but I don't have Hashi's). Last week I had a CT scan with contrast dye which was iodine (absolutely unavoidable) and haven't felt any different but haven't had any blood tests done since.

did they use iodinated 'contrast' for the CT scan ?

if so~ were you advised to drink plenty of water over the next few day's to help clear ir out ?

I was looking at a study the other day about iodinated contrast / thyroid patients ... can't remember it clearly off the top of my head .. will add it later if i find the post it was on. Seem to remember that iodinated contrast can mess with TSH level ... lowering it, i think .. can't remember if it messes with T4/T3 as well)

I think there were some cases in research studies where hyperthyroidism was kicked off following use of iodinated contrast .. will get back to you if i find it .

I've not read anything specific about x rays / thyroid .. apart from in dentistry due to being close to thyroid ,, but the most modern dental x ray machines use very low amount of x rays and are more closely targeted so apparently not seen as such a risk for thyroid as the older ones used to be . but some people/ dentists do still prefer to use a thyroid shield when having dental x rays .

Ah...here is the most recent post discussing contrast in CT scan healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

the study i found showing cases of hyperthyroidism following iodinated contrast is in the replies . i had remembered it wrong .. it was a mainly a concern if the patient was ALREADY hyperthyroid .

if you put 'CT contrast' or 'X rays' into the 'Search HealthUnlocked ' box at the top of this page . and set the responses to Thyroiduk .. you will find lots of previous posts on the subject which may provide you with more information .

Hi, thanks, no iodine so this must be something else I guess.

interestingly I have hashimotos and have had two chest x-rays last year and several dental x-rays and I have become quite unwell. Although last year I also agreed to reduce my thyroxine to 100mg as GP didn’t like my TSH being suppressed. At first nothing seemed to change. I continued with my vitamin schedule but my cholesterol jumped from 6.4 to 7.1 and this of course has resulted in me agreeing to try a statin.

Now I’m feeling very symptomatic (feeling cold most of the time, breathless on exertion, IBS/or constipation and joint aches and more tired than usual) plus this last year I’ve had three URTI infections all most unusual for me!

I did a monitor my health blood test which has returned the same results as last year which has suprised me but my TSH is 1.4 and I’ve never functioned well with a TSH above 1 so I’ve decided that on balance I’m going to go back to my dose of 125mcg of T4 monitor my symptoms and retest in 6 weeks. Actually that will be my GP annual recall test.

In all of this my GP and I have been battling the reason for my almost continual coughing from asthma and URTI and have drawn blanks until I twigged that actually all my symptoms could well be as a result of my reduced T4 so if I’m correct (we will see in 6 weeks) I will be reporting this to him.

I have learnt in this journey that when you have this disease you very much have to learn about it yourself and present the knowledge you have learned to them in order to challenge them as unless you suffer from this awful condition no one can possibly know what it’s really like 👍🏻
