reference ranges at the same lab change all the time ,eg large changes when new machine or method is used for testing, small tweaks when local reference samples are updated :

mine ~all same lab:

0.36 - 4.1 (2003)

0.02 - 6 (2005 -2014)

0.05 - 6 (2015)

0.34 - 5.6 (2016 -2017)

0.57 - 3.6 (2018 - present)

fT4 ranges were changed even more:

13 - 26 (2005-2006)

11.2 - 26 (2007 -2008)

11-24 (2009)

9.5-20 (2011)

8-18 (2012 -2017)

7.9-14 ( 2018 -present )

No need to worry. They've possibly recalibrated the machine or maybe just time for an update which they do from time to time.

In 1995 my surgery's range was 0.0-6.0

In 1997 it was 0.2-4.0 which they later changed to 0.27-4.20

in 2017 it changed to 0.35-5.5 which is still the current range.

No need to be suspicious.

ok.

That’s me now! I’ve learnt to be suspicious re thyroid treatment 🫤

Well🤔 to name but one diagnosis

Does it not mean one has to be more hypo at diagnosis? More ill?

Considering that the guidelines still say that TSH has to be greater than 10 for diagnosis, or over range plus raised antibodies, it doesn't seem to matter what the range is.

Good idea to be suspicious in all matters 'thyroid' :)

, but in this instance~ no it doesn't make it harder to get diagnosed, (you don't have to be more ill).

when you use different machine , calibrated to a different range , you also get a different number for 'the result'

if the machine has a range of [5 - 15] and you have "middling levels" of 'whatever it's testing' in your blood , then you will get a result of about "10" from that test .

but if you put the SAME blood sample through a different machine with a range of [10 - 20] you would get a result of about "15"

Symptoms are king, blood tests are a guide and NHS blood tests pointless as there is not enough info on thyroid status tests - Medical 'catch phrase' like the TV game show nine squares cover a scene, but rarely more than two are ever exposed - guess the rest. That's why I just use private blood tests - better quality.

I am having this from my hospital, I am not sure if they are using AI testing. My results have the word NOTICE. Which means its not accredited.

If they are NHS thyroid tests done at an NHS hospital lab , the lab will surely be accredited ?

what do you mean 'AI' ?

Not what you're looking for?
