14 weeks pregnant and high TSH

hi everyone,

I am 14 weeks pregnant. The midwife was meant to test my thyroid at week 9 due to pregnancy. Turns out she didn’t. I have had results back from a GP test and it is a shocking 4.26 mu/L. The Obstetrician said it needed to be below 2. So I have two questions:

1. Has anyone else had similar results at the same time and did not lose the baby?

2. How can I decrease my TSH quickly (I’ll be increasing my dose in the meantime but I understand this can take some weeks)

Thank you for any advice you can give.

At about the same time my TSH was 8.something. I was fobbed off (pre diagnosis).

He was a whopping 9lb 4oz at born at 39weeks. Absolute brick house now at 5! 🤣

Best to get your TSH down as soon as you can but it can be fine. ♥️

oh gosh that is such a relief… I know it doesn’t mean I’ll have the same result but I am just reading bad news online about it so it is fresh air to hear you and your baby were fine!

So they never put you on thyroid medicine even after seeing that result?! Crazy times!

I didn't know enough then. They agreed to retest but that was done in the afternoon so my TSH had fallen to 4.something so because it was in range they were happy.

If I knew then what I know now I'd have come out swinging but there we are.

We were both fine and healthy and I had no issues with milk production so we did ok. Thankfully.

If I were you I'd increase my dose by 25mcg and tell the doctor why you'd done it.

was levothyroxine dose increased when conception was confirmed

Have you now increased dose levothyroxine

Get vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 levels tested via GP

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

no it wasn’t increased at conception unfortunately. They said they did a thyroid function and they didn’t so we are late now trying to get back up to the right levels. I am so angry about it.

Yes, I am on supplements for those - you gave me some advice about a year and a half ago and get them tested regularly (privately as doc won’t do it through nhs)

Try not to worry .

The TSH itself is not the point ..the T4 (and T3?) is what actually matters , and there is still a reasonable amount of fT4 there (28%). ....so even though not ideal ,you probably did have 'enough' ..... by now the baby has grown a thyroid of it's own and is happily sitting there making it's own T4.

When i trained as an NNEB they used to tell us that as a general rule the baby will take what nutrition it needs at the expense of the mother ( parasitic little buggers that they are )... so think positive thoughts ...... hopefully the same concept applies to "pinching all your T4" when it needs it, even if that leaves you struggling to walk up hill.

thank you so much for responding. I’ve shared it with my husband too - you have really gave us some perspective and all we can do is hope for the best! Thanks so much!
