Professor Krish Chatterjee awarded a New Year’s Honour

Huge congratulations to Krishna Chatterjee, Professor of Endocrinology at the IMS-MRL who has been made a CBE (Commander of the order of the British Empire) in the King’s New Year Honours, for services to people with endocrine disorders.

Krish is known for discoveries of genetic disorders of thyroid gland formation, the regulation of hormone synthesis and hormone action. These have changed our understanding of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis.

He said:

I am delighted that my contributions to endocrine disorders have been honoured in this way. This also represents the efforts of many scientists and clinical colleagues in Cambridge and internationally, with whom I have worked over the years. Together with the patients participating in our research, we strive to advance knowledge and outcomes in rare hormone disorders.

Krish’s research group is focused on genetic and molecular endocrinology, exploring disorders including resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) and PPARgamma gene defects associated with lipodystrophic insulin resistance. They have also shown how deficiency of human selenocysteine-containing proteins leads to a multisystem disease, including disordered thyroid hormone metabolism, and works on translating his discoveries to improve diagnosis and treatment of thyroid conditions.

He is my Endo. I’ve never met him face to face but he’s actually been ok and wrote a letter supporting my use of T3 only.

which hospital is he based at? If I ever want a referral I want this man !!!!

It wasn’t so easy, I was already stable on T3 and am unable to take Levothyroxine as I seem to be allergic to all brands/forms of it. I had been buying T3 from Germany with a private prescription but after Brexit, that was no longer available. He originally wrote to my GP saying he supported its prescription on the NHS for me 4 years ago but that was ignored and I was told that my case wasn’t “special” enough. I finally was prescribed it by my GP last January.

This is interesting. I have just had my referral denied even though I was originally treated there and am currently taking T3 and T4. And the response was we are unable to prescribe and monitor the use of T3. I just don't understand.

Prof Chatterjee's ICB (used to be CCG) is Cambridgeshire. They barely allow T3 prescribing now. It beggars belief - they don't allow him to do what he specialises in ??

Great news. When he was BTA President, I was lucky enough to meet him at the HoL, with reps from the other thyroid charities and organisations. He seemed a calm, gracious man, a listener, and he is supportive of the T3 situation.

Yes he does seem a calm reasonable man. I have been incredibly defensive during all my appointments with him but he has always been courteous. I really have to try to not be so defensive but it is very difficult when you’ve always had to fight for everything.
