which foods ?.

hi everyone. I went to my gp yesterday to ask about diet and exercise after being newly diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. He seemed quite knowledgeable about thyroid, but he said I should eat a more plant based diet. He said I could eat fish, eggs, dairy etc but that's not what I read. I am struggling to know exactly what to eat.

Breakfast is normally just a cup of coffee. Lunch is maybe some crackers with soft cheese, soup and bread roll.

Dinner consists of roast, cottage pie, mackeral on toast , chicken wrapped in bacon and cheese, salad with cheese , egg,ham ,quich, tuna, cheese omelette, jacket potato with sausages and cheese, egg on toast.

I'm type 1 diabetic so I cut down on carbs. Then after my heart attack I started to eat a fair bit of protein especially oily fish. Now I don't know what to eat.

Exercise , the gp said I can carry on with light exercise in the gym and aqua fit but no hitt like exercise until I have my first app with an endocrinologist.

Any advice please.x

Looking at previous post

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu....

Looks more like early stage Hashimoto’s, not Graves’ disease

Hashimoto’s frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results and symptoms before becoming increasingly hypothyroid

ESSENTIAL To test TSI or Trab antibodies for Graves’ disease

We see a steady stream of early stage Hashimoto’s patients misdiagnosed as Graves Disease if thyroid antibodies aren’t tested

High cholesterol is strongly linked to being hypothyroid (hashimoto’s)

Low cholesterol is linked to HYPERthyroid (Graves disease)

As you have Type one diabetes have you had coeliac blood test done

If not you need testing

Acid reflux is common hypothyroid symptom due to LOW stomach acid

PPI like lansoprazole will significantly reduce vitamin levels

Suggest you contact GP and politely insist on TSI or Trab antibodies tested for Graves’ disease

And TPO and TG antibodies for Hashimoto’s

And most importantly vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 testing too

Alternatively get full testing done privately

all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

If you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), treatment may be delayed until this problem is treated. This is because having an underactive thyroid can lead to an increased cholesterol level, and treating hypothyroidism may cause your cholesterol level to decrease, without the need for statins. Statins are also more likely to cause muscle damage in people with an underactive thyroid.

SlowDragon,

I've just read Barb6374 previous post and she was on Amiodarone for a few years.

A side effect of Amiodarone is that it can cause thyroid disorders. This happened to a friend of mine, he was told it was rare but not sure if that's really the case.

Good point

We have had a few members post about Amiodarone

Search facility is a bit rubbish…..but bought up a few other posts

thank you. I asked gp about tpo and trab and he said next bloods in 3 weeks time he will test for antibodies. I have been on omeprazole and now lansoprazole for years.

my cholesterol is quite low but I'm on atorvastatin.

I'm waiting for the results of an advanced thyroid test done through medicheck.

 thank you for replys.

if hypothyroid you shouldn’t be on statin

See what Medichecks test shows

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Remember to stop taking any vitamins that contain biotin 5-7 days before test

i currently take vitamin d but a low dose 10up

Very unlikely enough

When was vitamin D last tested

Test twice year when supplementing

Aiming for vitamin D at least around 80nmol minimum

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with any autoimmune disease, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via NHS private testing service when supplementing

Do your own research as to wether you can also take vitamin K2 mk7
