My just 21 year old son voluntarily checked into an NHS psychiatric unit 2 weeks ago with severe OCD intrusive thoughts that no longer respond to SSRIs. He was an IVF baby and they ONLY FOUND OUT after his birth that i was seriously hypothyroid. He had no access to thyroid hormones whilst in my womb. This time last year he was at medical school and now he's very mentally disturbed. Ive found articles on google that you may find interesting.

This must be such a hard time for you. I’m so very sorry and hope that he makes a good recovery as quickly as possible.
But I think he probably did have enough thyroid hormone in the womb (doubt he would have made it as far as starting training to be a doctor if he hadn’t).
It’s incredibly common for women to start suffering hypothyroidism after birth.
I have a recollection that beyond a certain week of gestation in the womb that a developing foetus can make enough thyroid hormone to sustain their own needs despite what the mother has circulating in her own blood stream—in fact, I’m sure I’ve read that a developing baby’s thyroid hormone level might sustain the pregnant mother’s hormone levels—which is why there’s a sudden plummet in levels after birth.
Has he had his own thyroid levels checked now? Autoimmune hypothyroidism is hereditary to a degree.
Thank you for your reply! I had all the symptoms of hypothyroidism before IVF but nobody tested me and I didnt know any better even though my late grandma had thyroid disease. I believe that it is for this reason that my body never allowed a natural pregnancy so aged 40 I went against nature with ivf . Suzy Cohen writes about OCD and Hypothyroidism. There are articles by others that shine a light on this subject.
So sorry and sad for you both. Please get B 12 levels checked as this can cause such symptoms. I have personal experience of this with my brother.
so so sorry to hear of your sons sad demise. I hope they thoroughly check his blood work......including his B12 levels. I hope that a postive way forward is found and your son recovers his health. Hugs xxx
I’m so very sorry to hear this you must be beside yourself with worry. Hopefully his condition can be sorted out now he is in hospital and getting help.
He is still the same person he always was though and hopefully with treatment he will be back to how he was before this crisis. Sending (((big hugs))) to you both.
Dear me! we read a lot of people's problems on this forum
First of all I am extremely sorry that your son has a serious mental condition and I do hope some doctor can assist him by trying to stabilise and restore his health.
It also affects the whole family who are worried about him and who feel helpless when doctors cannot restore his health.
I am sorry your son is in hospital and I would request the doctors to give him a Full Thyroid Function Test which is:-
T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3 and thyroid antibodies.
Blood draw should be at the very earliest and a fasting test (he can drink water).
Has he been tested for hypothyroidism?
I ask because before i was adequately medicated OCD had almost entirely taken over my life.
It has all but gone now. Might be worth getting his thyroid levels tested x
