Iodine in Oat milk

Hi

I have started using Oatly oat milk and there is 22.5ug or Iodine per 100ml.

Should I be worried about this and the effect it may have on my Thyriod and medication?

Thanks

Lindsay

We've had several posts like this. The amount of iodine is broadly similar to the amount in dairy milk.

The manufacturers are doing this so that switching to non-diary products cannot be blamed for causing iodine deficiency.

Therefore, if you wouldn't have worried about 100mL of dairy milk, don't worry about 100mL of Oatly. But do check as not all non-diary products have the added iodine.

Thank you so much for explaining this. I was worrying about having a cuppa after an hour of my meds but I feel so much better as it never bothered me before with cow’s milk.

I have just gone dairy free and prefer oat milk of all the nonmilk milks

personally I wouldn’t buy any with iodine in

There are several brands of oat milk that don’t add iodine

The beige coloured Oatly doesn’t add iodine

(the blue one does have iodine added)

Plenish make oat milk from guaranteed gluten free oats and iodine free

thanks… I was reading that most oat milks have oil in them so picked this one as there are no oils. Others also say not to drink oat milk as it’s spikes your blood sugars. I never know who to listen to but hate the taste of other milk alternatives. I used to love the Oatly Semi but that has oil in it. :(

my Lipodema specialist advised trying dairy free to try to reduce inflammation

I have been gluten free since 2016

Thanks to increasing numbers of vegans….dairy free options are more widely available

The bad thing about oat milk is that it contains Lectins.

As you condition sadly gets worse you might look into an AIP diet which has greatly helped me in the past.

Healing your gut seems to be a way to heal your thyroid. Haveing a lectin free diet can help that in most cases.

If u feal bloating and indegestion after taking oat milk then there is a clue. But you might be OK.

I would just advise you to use a dropper with some iodine made from spinach of something similar. But dont use it everyday the RDA amount or you can overload your thyroid.

I drink cocunut milk instead!!

Hope this helps.
