Happy Sunday lovely people. Quick question:- When looking at iron panel results do you still find out what percentage through the range you are? Hopefully seeing GP tomorrow and I was going to ask about my iron panael results (privately done I know) whilst I broach the subject of having my levo dose increased. Thank you all

Auders
When discussing iron panels we often refer to optimal levels suggested by
rt3-adrenals.org/Iron_test_...
which are:
Serum iron: 55 to 70% of the range, higher end for men
Saturation: optimal is 35 to 45%, higher end for men
Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) or Transferrin: Low in range indicates lack of capacity for additional iron, High in range indicates body's need for supplemental iron
You can work out percentages with this calculator using the "inne" tab:

Result in first box, low limit of range in second box, high limit of range in third box, click on OBLICZ to calculate.
As for ferritin NICE say
In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency.
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/anae...
However, the iron panel would need to confirm this because you can have low ferritin with perfectly good serum iron and saturation levels.
Also, if iron deficiency is shown then a full blood count should be done to see if there is also anaemia, you can have iron deficiency with or without anaemia.
High level of ferritin with low serum iron/low saturation indicates inflammation or infection; High level with high serum iron and low TIBC indicates excess iron; Over range with saturation above 45% suggests hemochromatosis
Some experts say that the optimal ferritin level for thyroid function is 90-110ug/L.

Auders, I use percentage through the range for everything where the range makes it possible. It allows me to check whether there has been an increase or decrease in various tests e.g. liver function, kidney function, full blood count etc.
If a particular test result is 10% through the range on one test and is 90% through the range the next time it is tested I will do some research to find out what might cause such a dramatic change. In my opinion, it's very helpful.
Thanks so much for that. I made a note of how to work out the percentage. So much easier to use the calculator bit tho! There again it’s good to use my brain as well. Will definitely ask Gp to have a look at my results, whether or not she will because they were private tests is another thing. Otherwise I could ask her to do them (cost them more money!) Touchwood I’ve never come across just how bad the NHS has become until now, and I worked in it as a nurse for nearly 30 years. Again many thanks 🙏
