Coming off levothyroxine

Hi sorry it’s my third post in a week but I had drs today to discuss high phosphorus and was worried about kidneys and parathyroid. He said my TSH is quite low and as my fatigue isn’t getting better and it’s up and down he was basically saying I should come off levothyroxine as my initial diagnosis was subclinical hypothyroidism and that they only agreed to put me on it as a trial to see if my fatigue got better. I said but wouldn’t my heart rate get lower coming off it as it’s already low and he said no because your only subclinically hypothyroid. Then I said would too much levothyroxine make fatigue worse and he said no but it can cause heart problems which I have been getting. So he said I should drop to at least 75mcg but pretty much said come off them. He did ask if my thyroid antibodies were positive and I said yes both are so he was like ok so at some point your going to be hypothyroid. But now I’m like maybe I shouldn’t of started them in the first place and waited to see if the fatigue got better. Maybe I’m making everything worse and I’m not needing the levothyroxine. I’m really confused on what to do for the best. I mean I’d love to be drug free that would be great but has anyone ever stopped taking levothyroxine?

Original post 4 years ago shows you were absolutely correct to be started on levothyroxine

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking

You might need to consider getting T3 prescribed alongside (slightly reduced dose) levothyroxine

But if my fatigue isn’t 100% better is he right in saying I should come off it because I am only subclinically hypothyroid? I’m still on 87.50mcg and there’s no way my gp would give me T3 but now he’s out it in my head that it could be the cause of my heart ectopics etc. I have testosterone injection (nebido) every 13 weeks.

A GP can’t initially prescribe T3 anyway

Has to be prescribed via endocrinologist

Either private or (long wait and difficult) NHS

My GP basically said today I’m young and fit and didn’t need it.

Your doctor is an idiot. Don't be taken in by this 'subclinical' claptrap. That is just a medical excuse for treating less people because they hate treating hypo. Hypothyroidism is like pregnancy - either you are or you aren't. You can't be subclinically pregnant, can you. So, forget what he said, he has no idea what he's talking about!

There are many young, fit members of this forum who benefit from the addition of Liothyronine.

I think the OP is talking about the levo. GP doesn't think he needs levo because he was only subclinical.
