Hi Gorg, welcome.

What brands of levothyroxine have you tried? Has your doctor tried you on different brands? Some find that the excipients (the fillers in the tablets) don’t agree with them—commonly, people react to acacia powder, which is frequently added to the ingredients, but there are other excipients that have the same effect on others.

Alternatively, it may be nothing to do with the brand and everything to do with the dosage (as in, you might not be on a high enough dosage). How long have you been on that dose? Do you have any blood test results to share?

If you are on any other meds there could be some interplay, I'm on amlodipine and this doesn't work well with liothyronine apparently, I've got itchy skin atm

Hello Gorg. There are so many potential causes of itchy skin. It is often something external irritating the skin such as a moisturiser, dust, washing powder etc if it's not medication. For me, giving up gluten has completely resolved the issue. I still find this difficult to believe after decades of desperation with itchy skin and trying every remedy, unguent and exclusion diet out there. Worth a try in any event. Good luck.

Hi Gorg

Despite getting my thyroid levels to a reasonable level, I have also never been able to get rid of itchy skin. I take one Benadryl (24 hr version) a day, which seems to keep it reasonably in check but if I dare to come off, it comes back. I had this pre-thyroid diagnosis too.

Like you, my GP is clueless.

I have no solution as yet but thought I’d share where my own research is taking me. I’m currently looking at the areas of histamine intolerance and mast cell activation. My theory is that, when we are left unmedicated or under medicated for a long time (as I was, possibly you too?) there’s all sort of collateral damage to the body. We certainly know that gut and other issues apply here. But maybe our ability to tolerate histamine gets damaged too?

If you’re interested, take a look at Alison Vickery‘s site:

Also, I don’t know whether you’re male/female or what age you are but hormones can play a part in this too. Louise Newsome’s guide to Histamine Intolerance is very interesting:

Hi Gorg. I had the same problem. I am allergic to all the tablets. And was put on liquid.I think there was a letter from the health service to Gap's last year or the year before saying that patients who could not tolerate tablet form levothyroxine, could be put on liquid.

Good luck.

Zeolite clay has been shown to bind histamines and toxins in the gut. This company…nhinnovations.com/product/t... selling it in sachets but I bought a bag of pure zeolite from ‘The Clay Cure’ company. It’s a much cheaper way to buy it and I find the company to be very good and their clay is all tested for purity. I find it helps if I get itchy from histamine and helps avoid or resolve a hangover. 🙂

Hi, Have you ever had an iron panel done, which includes ferritin? Sometimes itchy skin is a symptom of low iron.
