How do I research endocrinologists?

How do I go about researching a thyroid friendly and NDT friendly endocrinologist in my area? Where can I find information about them? The NHS really doesn’t give out much info.

I’ve tried just Google searching but not getting up to date results in Birmingham.

It isn’t going to be possible to contact them all and I want to ask GP to refer me (she doesn’t approve of me taking NDT, says I’m going to get heart disease and osteoporosis and has basically washed her hands of me! But NDT has enabled me to have a life, so I’m not giving it up!)

Email Thyroid U.K. for list of recommended thyroid specialist endocrinologist and doctors who will prescribe T3 or NDT

tukadmin@thyroiduk.org

BEFORE considering booking any consultation we ALWAYS recommend getting FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis. Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally before 9am last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

On T3 or NDT - day before test split daily dose into 3 smaller doses, spread through the day at approx 8 hour intervals, taking last 1/2 or 1/3rd of daily dose NDT 8-12 hours before test

Remember to stop taking any vitamin supplements that contain biotin a week before blood test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins
