Someone has put this idea to my mind to look into. I haven't done much research about hyperparathyroidism as i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism as a result of Subacute Thyroiditis. I have also been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Has anyone here had tests done for Hyperparathyroidism? Why is this not checked together with thyroid? Looks like even private doctors in UK settle for hypo diagnose instead of digging deeper.
I can see that BlueHorison does test but they didn't do the 24h urine test .
I haven't actually have urine test for 20 years. I'm from Poland originally and urine tests are as standard as annual bloods. They always get some together but since I've moved here 20 years ago, I haven't had one done.

But symptoms are very similar yet parathyroid test or calcium levels are not tested only standard thyroid tests just because symptoms are indicating thyroid issues however symptoms are similar in both cases
I was diagnosed with graves in 2018 and lost my thyroid,.. but in 2020 my calcium went over range I found these results my self in my thyroid blood results sometimes calcium is done in a full thyroid test as is my case, my gp never even bothered telling me about the over range calcium.😠 as I was feeling unwell ( urgency in needing the toilet to urinate especially though night, server thirst, bad headache, bone vibration and pain, insomnia, fast heartbeat, sickly feeling, (ongoing even now) I asked my gp to send the results of the 2 over range calciums to my endo who did 2 sets of pth, which both came bk over range along with over range calcium, I was told I probably have primary hyperparathiyroidism, but after one normal blood test I've been discharged from the clinic, I now find out like thyroid conditions these endos know far less about parathyroid conditions 🤦♀️ it's a condition that can give you similar symptoms to hyperthyroidism /hypothyroidism, I'm in the process of fighting the endo as my tests in 2020 show a bad relationship between pth and calcium in that they are both at the top end of the range or over range when in fact they should do a see saw where if your calcium is say 2.35 your pth should be in mid range or just above, or the other way around my calcium as been at the top end 2.53 with a pth of 8.1 and calcium of 2.54 pth of 9.5....( PTH range.. 1.60..6.90) calcium.. (Range 2.10.. 2.60) my last blood done march this year was pth 6.6 (top end), calcium 2.49..(top end of range) it's a fight getting the endo/gp to acknowledge this condition because you can also have a normal calcium level and still have primary hyperparathiyroidism, (the general consensus is its a swelling on one or more of the parathyroid glands making them go over active/under active much like our thyroid can go over/under active but they haven no connection to each other the parathyroids only job is to regulate calcium, the thyroid does way more👍 if in doubt get your calcium checked, I found it good to go bk in previous records to find my normal resting calcium first then you can compare mine as been steadly rising since 2020..👍
Thank you, this link is very helpful and i have an those symptoms including tingling in hand. I assist get tingling in my lips often. Though i didn't have the surgery which could cause the damage. Different thyroid issues seen to run in my family plus I grew up 500 miles away from Chernobyl when the disaster happened in 86. Hence why as soon as my symptoms started 1.5y ago, I was referred for an urgent thyroidectomy to exclude cancer. I refused it which note my Endo says was the right thigh to do.
Very often there are no symptoms with hpth and even when there are it can extremely difficult to diagnose. It took 2 years for me to get a definite diagnosis. If Vitd is found to be deficient then routinely a calcium test should be done before supplementing but few GPs would do this.
My vit D had been very low and i go to private Endo. One said to supplement after the summer (this was last year) and the serving one said to supplement when i went to see her in dec. No calcium years were done though. This was only brought to my attention when funny enough, my other half went to a hairdresser and there were discussing thyroid issues. One of the ladies had twin sisters which suffered a lot in the last 2 years, weight gain, fatigue, aching joints and muscles. My partner said to her that i have hypo and since then adjust cfs and this is when she said to definitely have also parathyroid checked. Those twins assist had cfs suggested since thyroid was either fine or treated and since then, they have been diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism.
With respect I think there is some confusion here with the thyroid, hypo and hyper parathyroid issues, they aren’t connected in any way and have different causes. Hyperparathyroidism is usually caused by a benign tumour which needs removing, severe vitd deficiency can be a cause but this can be corrected with supplements.
Hypoparathyroidism is usually caused either by removal or damage during thyroid surgery and both types can be genetic.
It’s a complicated subject and not one that many Drs understand.
