I hope everyone is well! Just wondering if anyone with Hypothyroidism takes WellWoman and has noticed a positive change? I've recently started taking them and it's improved my bowel movements, which is always good. Just asking out of curiosity and as a way of introducing myself to the group ☺️.

Thank you for mentioning these - I just ordered them.

Hi,

Do they contain magnesium? That would improve bowel movement, as it’s brilliant for that.

Are you talking about a multi-vit? If so, that's really, really not a good idea, for all sorts of reasons. But, the main reason being, if it contains iron, that will block the absorption of everything else, so you're just wasting your money.

I take it at least 2 hours after Levothyroxine as advised 😊.

Irrelevant. In any case, your pharmacist was totally wrong. Iron, magnesium and vit D - all of which are present in this mult - should be taken four hours away from thyroid hormone.

You say you're going to use them up so as not to waste them, but you won't get any benefit from them except for the iron and there's not enough of that to help any sort of deficiency.

Well fortunately I always take it during the late afternoon/evening anyway once I’m home from uni. And as I’ve mentioned, I don’t have any deficiencies etc, it’s just a little pick me up when I’m not feeding myself adequately due to depressive/anxious episodes.

I understand your reasoning, but it doesn't work that way. In fact, it won't be doing anything much at all - except that you might be taking too much copper, which will make you ill.

Have you had all your nutrients tested? I haven't read all the replies on here.

Don't bother with any multivitamin. They contain too little of anything to help low levels or deficiencies, tend to use the cheapest and wrong form of active ingredients, often contain things we shouldn't take unless tested and found to be deficient.

Wellwoman Original:

Soya Bean Oil (from Soya) - it's suggested that we hypo patients avoid soy in all it's forms.

Magnesium Oxide - the cheapest and least absorbable of all forms of magnesium and used to treat constipation

Zinc Sulphate

Copper Sulphate

Do you know that you need these? They should be balanced and we hypos tend to have one high and the other low, so before supplementing it's best to test and see if we need to improve either of these.

Lecithin (from Soya) - soya again

Folic Acid (as Pteroylmonoglutamic Acid) - methylfolate is the recommended form, not folic acid

Selenium (Sodium Selenite) - selenite is an inorganic form and not recommended. The recommended forms are Selenium L-Selenomethionine or a yeast bound selenium/

Vitamin K - doesn't say which form but should be K2. K1 is the blood clotting form (they give to new born babies) and shouldn't be taken by anyone taking blood thinners. Because K1 is cheap, this is most likely the form they've included especially as the've given a warning on their website about not taking this supplement if on anti-coagulants.

Vitamin B12 (as Cyanocobalamin) - Methylcobalamin is the recommended form not cyanocobalamin.

It also contains iron which affects absorption of everything else as it needs to be taken 2 hours away from other supplements.

It also contains Vit C and this needs to be taken 2 hours away from B12 as it can stop the body using the B12.

I would cancel your order/stop taking them and test key nutrients (Vit D, B12, Folate and Ferritin), put results on here for members to suggest where you may need to supplement.

And just to be clear, magnesium per se doesn't improve bowel movements, it's magnesium citrate that does that job, each form of magnesium helps with different things.

Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to go into detail. I was wary when I saw it contains soya, as I've been aware it's something to avoid. I asked the pharmacist prior to purchasing and he said it's all okay as long as it's taken at least 2 hours after Levothyroxine. Finding multivitamins without iodine is already difficult enough, so I thought it would be worth a shot.

I took advantage of the 3 for 2 offer at Boots; I suppose I'll carry on taking them to avoid waste, and consult my GP on the next steps 😅.

I've recently come out of a depressive episode, so I suppose they're helpful with getting something in my system when I'm not eating properly, even though I don't have any deficiencies etc.

I'll keep everything you've said in mind - thank you again!
