Best NDT?

Good morning. I have an appointment today with my doctor and I think he might recommend ndt. If he does, what brand is the best? I am aware of the fact there have been recalls of specific ones, so I’m just wondering what the best one is in your opinion. Thank you

We are all different and one NDT may suit one person and not another. It is trial and error for many members. Once you find that the one you're taking has relieved/or is relieving your clinical symptoms, ask the pharmacist to order it for you in the future.

Of course. I’m just wondering what one is more stable. As I mentioned, I’ve heard that a lot aren’t good anymore and keep getting recalled

It's very difficult to know because our bodies can react differently to thyroid hormone repacements.

If you mean prescribed NDT there's not a lot of choice, maybe Erfa and Armour. If without prescription there now only seems to be Thyroid-S from Thailand.

Yes I meant prescribed. Thank you!

Erfa is a lot cheaper than Armour. I suggest that you try that first. Prices vary, so come back here once you know what you are getting. It's unlikely that you will get it on the NHS unfortunately.

Thank you! Yeah I’m seeing a private endo bc my doctors wouldn’t even consider anything other than Levo

Angie10116 Also NP thyroid/Acella is available. I took it a few years back and found it to be effective. It may have been reformulated since then tho.

For any replacement thyroid hormones to work well we need OPTIMAL vitamin levels

What were most recent vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 results and ranges

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Angie10116 profile image
Angie10116 in reply toSlowDragon

Vitamin d was 50 last time, folate can’t remember, ferritin was 40 and b12 was 650. I’m simply wondering about which brand is best because of all of the recalls😁. I don’t have the ranges

vitamin D 50nmol (U.K. units) presumably….if so needs improving to at least around 80nmol and around 100nmol maybe better

Ferritin obviously needs improving too. Have you had full iron panel test for anaemia?

Angie10116 profile image
Angie10116 in reply toSlowDragon

I’m taking 800 iud of vitamin D daily. Maybe I’ll try taking more. Yes iron panel was all good, just the ferritin was low. I was told to take iron supplements for it

You are legally entitled to copies of your test results

If iron is low GP should prescribe iron and essential to regularly retest full iron panel at least every 3-4 months

Vitamin D

Likely to need at least 1000iu-2000iu daily

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via NHS private testing service when supplementing

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average
