Tpo ab

Hi ,

Have this doubt since long .Forgot to ask.now asking.

My question

Can a person who has tpo antibodies close to zero when testing first time, develop to antibodies over a period of time.?

First time my tpo ab was 0.24(lab ref less than 35).

Then a couple of years later tpo ab 28 (ref range less than 60).

Then a couple of months later tpoab 31 (ref range less than 60)

(all 3 have been considered negative since they are within the range of the labs)

Ultrasound is showing normal thyroid gland.

When first time dxed ., mentioned by the dr as subclinical hypothyroidism with tpoab negative.

vitamin d,b12 deficiency,insulin resistance

weight gain, dry skin, acnes, premature greying mentioned.)

My doubt

*Does increase in tpo ab means hashimotos?Or is it nothing to discuss .

Asking this because though it has increased , it is still within ref range.

Any insights known would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies

NHS doesn’t test TG antibodies unless TPO are high

20% of Hashimoto’s patients never have high thyroid antibodies

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Low vitamin levels common as we get older too

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3

If TPO or TG thyroid antibodies are high this is usually due to Hashimoto’s (commonly known in UK as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all primary hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto’s. Low vitamin levels are particularly common with Hashimoto’s. Gluten intolerance is often a hidden issue to.
