I'm currently researching as much as I can about Hypothyroid as I cam trying to get a diagnosis, and I stumbled upon something that says smoking, specifically nicotine has a suppressant effect upon TSH.
I am an ex smoker, but am still sadly trying to wean myself off nicotine replacement lozenges. I'm wondering now if this nicotine intake could be making my TSH lower than it would be if I wasn't taking them? Or have I misunderstood, and nicotine has a suppressant effect upon the thyroid and could be exacerbating the underactive thyroid?

I have TSH records going back to 2003... including several years where i smoked a lot, 2 years where i didn't smoke at all , and several years of being very abstemious.... (1 a day after dinner with a very occasional weekend of 'loads') There was no apparent rise in my TSH levels for the 2 yrs of no smoking.TSH was consistently between 0.04 [0.02-6] and 0.69 [0.02 -6]
