Giving up sugar

I found an article about sugar and AI disease and while it was vague it did pique my curiosity!

Has anyone here given up sugar and found improvements in their symptoms or overall health?

I saw a tidbit from Isabella Wentz, who found around 80% of her followers found their symptoms improved when they removed sugar from their diet (anecdotal study of social media followers I think), it actually scored higher than gluten, dairy or soya for symptom improvement under the same study.

I do feel better when I keep sugar down, but I find it hard to avoid completely. It's used as a preservative in a lot of things, and a lot of things which can be otherwise healthy enough (for example spice mixes you might only use a few tsps of).

I've been reading some of Sarah Wilsons blog - she's written a few books on quitting sugar and has Hashi's.

"Quitting sugar has had the biggest impact on my AI, more so than my medication or any other medical fix (and, trust me, I’ve tried everything). In the past three years, I’ve been able to better manage my AI, but also – yes – reverse a lot of the damage.

I have zero thyroid antibodies now.

I’m on the most minimal dosage of thyroxin.

My hormone levels have fallen back into the right range (more on this soon!)."

I am taking it with a pinch of salt but I was wondering if there was any science behind her claims, especially the antibodies bit.

I have a savory tooth so I don't eat much sugar by way of cakes/chocolate etc but I do drink sugary tea and I suspect I ingest far more unknowingly since it seems to be in everything!

I think the link is that sugar, and the insulin resistance that comes from eating too much, are inflammatory, inflammation worsens autoimmune disease.

I do believe that reducing /cutting out refined sugar is a very good idea, and will most likely improve all body functions, and improve the how well the person functions /feels.... so i'm not arguing with the suggestion it has helped.....But i'm pretty sure there is no research about the less sugar/lower antibodies bit .. and my TPOab reduced massively all by themselves, i did nothing to try and help them. so we can't prove they went down because of anything we did.... unless we reintroduce sugar and see if they go back up.. and then repeat to make sure it wasn't a coincidence ..

'Minimal (reduced ?) dose' is interesting, but you'd need more history of bloods /dose to make more sense of that comment.

'reverse a lot of the damage' ? .. pretty bold claim but based on what ? lower TPOab do not prove reversal of damage .... they could show less autoimmune attacks on thyroid tissue recently , (they are the RESULT of thyroid damage not the CAUSE of it) .....is she referring to TPOab anyway, or TGab ?

(TGab have other causes as well as thyroid)
