Hi there! I was wondering if I could get some advise? I’ve had an underactive thyroid for some time now and currently taking 125mg of levothyroxine and I think I might be pregnant, I’ve taken 4 pregnancy tests, 1 yesterday and 3 today and all came back positive, I was wondering can levothyroxine cause false positives?

kimmy25,
Welcome to our forum and congraulations 😀. How exciting!
Did you have TFT’s (thyroid function test) preconception? Are thyroid hormones within range?
Your demand for T4 will quickly increase to maintain a euthyroid state so you must inform your GP asap for further TFT’s, and a dose adjustment if necessary to avoid neonatal complications. You will dosed by your TSH level which must be kept low.
"Women with known thyroid dysfunction who are taking LT4 (Levothyroxine) may need the dose increased by 30–50% to maintain euthyroidism from as early as 4–6 weeks' gestation, for optimal fetal growth and development, with the need for regular TFT monitoring" [De Groot et al, 2012].
Ensure your GP refers you to a specialist for review as not all GP’s are familiar with the dosing protocols for hypothyrodism during pregnancy. If GP is uncooperative, print out a copy of the NICE guidelines below to present.
