I'm going to repost this just in case people missed it who might know
Hi all, i've realised I probably need more zinc, now i'm aware that sweeteners can be a bad thing all the time but some of the supplements have no sweeteners but they do have microcrystalline cellulose, sorbitol or magnesium stearate. Are these ok with Hashimotos?
P.S I have now gone wheat, gluten, sugar and dairy free
also as another question does anyone have any advice on how to not keep losing weight on the above diet, I cant seem to stop having lost 14k in 10 months and am now only just above the medically unhealthy level
Many Thanks for any response

I think it can be really hard to avoid magnesium stearate—it’s a “filler” in so many tablets. See draxe.com/nutrition/magnesi... Honestly, I think it’s probably safe in the small doses packaged up with tablets.
Cellulose—well, if you eat vegetables you’ll have eaten cellulose. It’s non-digestible plant fibre, so (the clue’s in that description ) it will pass straight through you.
And sorbitol is a sugar alcohol (it isn’t sugar) that’s generally considered to be safe. Once again, it’s more like fibre than sugar—the body doesn’t digest much of it but it’s very sweet.
I’d take the tablets if I were low in zinc and those were the ingredients. You could argue it’s not optimal but having low zinc is even less optimal—once you’ve got your levels higher you could consider whether there’s a food source you could eat regularly to keep your levels topped up.
As for losing too much weight on your diet—I see you have a swallowing disorder (which hopefully has been fully checked out by your doctor?). I think the answer will be to up your non-gluten carbs—do you eat rice? Potatoes? And maybe increase your fat intake?
Thanks for getting back to me, and your detailed response.. much appreciated, alas rice and potatoes are both off the menu due to their starch content, this is the problem.. I eat a ton of stuff that is really healthy now so that's a huge bonus compared to my old diet but almost none of it has fat in it!!
Why is starch off the menu? Have you gone low carb? If you’ve gone low carb without increasing fat intake, you’re storing up loads of trouble...
If on the other hand you’ve cut out all manner of different foods in the hope you’ll feel better, especially if that wasn’t on medical advice.... please be careful. Orthorexia is a serious issue.
oh, i didnt know any of that, I'm really just trying to avoid foods which people say are bad for hashimotos which includes lots of starches.. so im just veering away from starch completely, the truth is I don't know anything so just following advice as I get it.. it would be great if i could just get some concrete advice that I could back but its all very confusing, contradictory and I'm wandering around in the dark losing weight at stupid speed
oh (this my 2nd reply to this) please see first one also.. i've just checked and no I dont think ive gone low carb as I eat nuts every day and salmon twice a week usually
Nuts and salmon are low carb. There’s no carbohydrate in salmon and very little carbohydrate in nuts.
You don’t need to cut out all starches. Generally, we only talk about going gluten free with Hashimoto’s. And gluten is in foods which are made from wheat. So pasta, bread, pastry, any breakfast cereal made from wheat, and cake are to be avoided (although you can buy or make gluten-free versions of all of those things.
There’s no gluten in potatoes or rice—in fact white rice is supposed to be one of those most easily-digested foods there is.
Thanks for reply, i need to look more into this i think!! cos it would be great to eat spuds again.. i'll try to find the article that says you shouldn't, I think its because its in the nightshade family which does effect 'some' hashimotos sufferers!
But if you’ve given up everything, how do you know which food affects you (assuming that any of it does—not everyone with Hashimoto’s needs to give up gluten )?
It’s much better to cut out one food type at a time. But, seeing how you’ve already cut out everything, maybe a way forward for you is to slowly introduce food types, one at a time, perhaps one a week, to see how it affects you?
That's a very good idea.. after talking with u earlier I bought a sensitivity test so that'll test for lots of things) I have already been to an allergist and got a list from her so if the 2 tests marry up well, then I can trust in the findings!
You've done marvellously well as weight gain is a common query when someone as hypothyroid, and takes levothyroxine as it usually slows down our our metabolism.
You could either eat more food or take some gluten food as well. Just keep eye on weight as you don't want to increase too much.
Alas I don't consider it doing well when I'm rocketing towards unhealthy weight, because I started at a healthy for my height at 12 stone and a bit, im now under 10 stone and so much of my muscle is gone aswell as the small quantity of middle aged fat I had started to develop.
gluten is a nono because I have hashimotos and am currently in the first stages of an elimination diet, thankyou for your feedback
I would suggest browsing the Diet Doctor website. They have an immense number of recipes and meal plans which are suitable for lots of different dietary requirements.
All the recipes are gluten-free, and they have recipes that are suitable for dairy-free, omnivore, vegetarian, vegan. So pick something that suits you and try it out.
It is a diet website and you want to gain weight not lose it - but you can always increase the size of your portions if you want to eat enough to gain weight.
P.S. I'm not aware that people have suggested we should not be eating starch. I'm wondering what kinds of foods you do eat.
thankyou, I will definitely check it out.. there is something about starches but I can't remember where i saw it right now, i'll have a look tomorrow and let you know..
Hi, I have the opposite problem so can’t help from experience, sorry. Have you read Izabella Wentz’s books or website thyroidpharmacist.com? She has Hashimoto’s and had the less common problem of weight loss also. She definitely includes fats and healthy carbs in her recipes. I find her info really helpful in general.
