Can I reduce my dosage myself?

Hi, please i need advice. I've been on carbimazole 5mg and ideral 40mg since january, my T4 was 0.0005 compared to an expected range of 0.35 but it has improved to 0.1 which makes it close to the expected range when i checked this month. Ive not been able to see the doctor in two months and i want to reduce the carbimazole dosage from 45mg per day that i used to take to 30mg. Can i do that on my own or i need to hear from the doctor?

Hello Phunmie and welcome to the forum :

What have you been diagnosed with to be taking Carbimazole - Graves Disease ?

This anti thyroid drug is designed to block your own thyroid hormones, T3 and T4, rising any further and slowly your levels will comes back down back into range and your symptoms reduce.

Where are you in your treatment plan and what symptoms are you now dealing with ?

Are you still needing the beta blocker ?

You say you are on 5 mcg Carb and then say you are on 45 Carb and want to drop to 30mcg ?

Do you have T3 and T4 levels as these are more important than a TSH ?

Yes i was diagnosed with diffuse symmetrical goitrogenic gland with increased vascularity so graves disease was suspected. And i was asked to take 45mg per day carbimazole.

How long have you been on the 45 mcg Carbimazole ?

What were your T3 and T4 levels at diagnosis and what are they now ?

What symptoms are you now dealing with ?

Have you now a diagnosis of Graves and positive over range TSI and or TR ab antibodies which are unique to this auto immune disease ?

Essential to test TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 together

Also need vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

To reply to someone you need to press the reply button under their post otherwise they do not get alerted that you have said anything and you, no doubt, feel ignored.

So with just this bit of information you maybe ok to drop some AT meds - I don't know :

I 'm sorry but with so little information it's difficult to say much of anything :

Are you still needing the beta blockers - if the answer is yes, I'm guessing you are still with high T3 and T4 levels and maybe the first step is to try and slowly ease off this medication and see how you go:
