Hashimoto’s = Leaky Gut?

Hi All

After a member on here recommended the Facebook group ‘Hashimoto’s Under construction’ I’ve recently been accepted on the private group which has an impressive over 90K members... there is lots and LOTS of reading / learning and I’m finding it very helpful and informative - although the odd post can be rather depressing (guess that’s just me coming to terms with being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s decades on and the realisation of how complex it is being rather overwhelming). However I’m positive as life can only get better by making informed changes as i learn!!

Sorry for the ramble, to get to my point I wanted to share I read something I didn’t know so wanted to share for feedback - it seems if you have Hashis you 100% have leaky gut!?

Today for me is day 1 Gluten free (small changes)

Thanks in advance for any comments / feedback.

Research suggests perhaps all autoimmune disease starts with leaky gut.....which causes which remains to be seen

Did you do coeliac blood test before starting on strictly gluten free diet?

Best to buy test online for under £20, just to rule coeliac out first

healthcheckshop.co.uk/store...?

Assuming test is negative you can immediately go on strictly gluten free diet

(If test is positive you will need to remain on high gluten diet until endoscopy, maximum 6 weeks wait officially)

Trying gluten free diet for 3-6 months. If no noticeable improvement then reintroduce gluten and see if symptoms get worse

Non Coeliac Gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and autoimmune disease

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/296...

The predominance of Hashimoto thyroiditis represents an interesting finding, since it has been indirectly confirmed by an Italian study, showing that autoimmune thyroid disease is a risk factor for the evolution towards NCGS in a group of patients with minimal duodenal inflammation. On these bases, an autoimmune stigma in NCGS is strongly supported

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/300...

The obtained results suggest that the gluten-free diet may bring clinical benefits to women with autoimmune thyroid disease

nuclmed.gr/wp/wp-content/up...

In summary, whereas it is not yet clear whether a gluten free diet can prevent autoimmune diseases, it is worth mentioning that HT patients with or without CD benefit from a diet low in gluten as far as the progression and the potential disease complications are concerned

Despite the fact that 5-10% of patients have Celiac disease, in my experience and in the experience of many other physicians, at least 80% + of patients with Hashimoto's who go gluten-free notice a reduction in their symptoms almost immediately.

Don’t expect your GP to know anything about leaky gut.

Thanks SlowDragon - Yes I did the coeliac blood test as per your previous recommendation and it was negative!

Hopefully I will be ok - theres lots of non gluten foods I like such as rice, oats etc

Thank you for all the links, I will look forward to reading...

Don’t expect your GP to know anything about leaky gut. This made me smile! I am not expecting much from General Practitioners period :-)

Best bread in my opinion is Waitrose sliced brown seeded

(and my husband likes it so much he has now also has gone GF)

You need dedicated gluten free toaster, separate butter, jam, chopping board etc

Marmite isn’t GF......Sainsbury’s version is

Blimey! Sounds like a right per-lava but needs must!

I love English mustard but that’s out! I’ll get GF bread on my next Ocado shop! I’m sure it’s trial and error and expect there will be a few slip ups along the way!

Mustard not on my menu

Looks like some English mustard is GF

I’ve just joined the group you mentioned. Interestingly though you have to agree not to discuss ‘controversial things like gluten/dairy and T3 only’. Interested to see what it’s about now.
