Overactive Thyroid, taking carbizamole. Keto diet?

Hi all.

Looking for some advice. I was diagnosed at the end of 2019 with an overactive thyroid.

I was put on 40mg of carbizamole at the time and over the last few months have been reduced. I was on a low dose of 5mg until last week when my consultant said I needed to up it to 10mg.

I have gained 2 stone in 8 months. I have tried everything to lose the weight and now looking to try the keto diet.

I know the tablets slow your metabolism down. I didnt lose loads of weight before I was diagnosed but literally feel awful being so fat for me.

I see so many people with an underactive thyroid losing weight on the keto but wanted to see if anyone with an overactive lost weight doing the keto diet on carbizamole

Happy to try anything if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks x

Hello LisaCr ad welcome to the forum :

Can you please give us your original blood test results and the positive antibody test result that was run as the medical evidence of diagnosis and what yor medication is based on.

Carbimazole is generally prescribed for Graves Disease, is this what you have been told you are dealing with ?

Currently your metabolism is being controlled by the drugs you are taking and I personally do not think this a good time to stress your body out any more than necessary.

You were diagnosed " hyper " and the opposite end of this seesaw is " hypo " and both ends can be disabling and cause you further health issues. There is little point punishing your body with diets and exercise - you are not in control of your metabolism at this point in time and you need to try and relax and ride out this phase of the disease.

The AT drug is controlling your metabolism and possible your dose is now too high - do you have any current blood test results to share with us ?

Your body needs time to mend and repair and would suggest a diet full of nutrients and goodness and suggest you ask for your core strength vitamins and minerals to be tested by running tests for feritin, folate B12 and vitamin D.

You might like to dip into the Elaine Moore Graves Disease Foundation website if you do have a diagnosis of Graves disease. There are various sections on mainstream medical procedures but also sections on more holistic, alternative approaches to this poorly understood and badly treated AI disease.

Your thyroid is the victim is all this not the cause - the cause is your immune system attacking your body and more importantly attacking your thyroid. There are sections on what you can do to calm down your own immune system and thereby reduce the anibodies that have caused your unwellness.

Carbimazole is said to correct your metabolism. As weight loss is common when hyper and regaining it is usual once your levels are in range. I never had very high thyroid levels although probably was hyper for a long time. I didn’t lose weight either, but I did have an extra out of control appetite.

I have been doing lower carb diet (80g daily of carbs) and have lost weight but I wouldn’t recommend any lower as you need a certain amount of carbs for good conversion of thyroid hormones. I currently have low thyroid level and since reducing carbs my appetite is very low.

We don’t have much control over metabolism and appetite especially when medication & thyroid levels are fluctuating so focus on adding nutritious foods, rather than cutting out foods.

Obtaining a printout of your previous and future results and keeping a record of your dose and symptoms is a good place to start. Understand the results and finding out what hasn’t been tested is important. ie Antibodies and nutrients.
