Just started taking 25Mcg Levothyroxine and started getting painful spots on my chin, never get spots so this is horrid! Should I stop taking them or will it get better? Should I try a different brand? Can anyone help?

I use to have painful spots appearing on my chin area when I started Levothyroxine. I don’t think it’s the medication I believe it’s hormone imbalance. For me it went on for over a decade. My gp prescribed medication for my skin but it never worked. My skin was also dry. Like you I’d never had spots in my life, not even as a teenager. A couple of years ago my Hashimoto got a lot worse. To cut a long story short I found out my T3 was very low. I was hardly converting T4 to active T3. I was finally prescribed T3 medication and low and behold my skin is now brilliant. I definitely think it was to do with low T3 and hormone imbalance. For over a year my skin has been clear.

Maybe you could check your T3 next time you have a test. Or contact Regenerus Laboratories and take the DIO2 gene test to see if you have a faulty gene like me. I did this and it came back positive. I paid £165 ish for the result and a trained person to interpret the result to me over the phone. Just a thought. I wish I’d done this years previously.

Thank you for the reply, I will check this next time I have a blood test, so did the t3 medication replace the Levo? X

No it has been in addition. I take T3 plus T4. To be honest I don’t really know why I’m still on T4 as I can only convert 8% of it to T3. This has been proven in a number of blood tests. Before I started T3 my T4 level was at highest point in the range. My TSH was about 6.0 and my T3 was only 3.9(range 3.7-6.0) = 8% conversion. At this point I could barely walk or sit up. Now I’m hiking and living life again.

Hi Stormz17

I had this problem, spots all along the jawline, really painful, when I was on Levothyroxine. This is just a starter dose and you need to be tested again in 6 to 8 weeks. Chances are you will need several more increases in dose to make you feel better. You may find that the spots disappear when you are adequately treated. My spots got better with the increase in dosage. It is probably due to hormones being all over the place and over time this will hopefully settle down. I no longer take Levo after swapping to NDT. Sorry I can't be of more help. It does take some time to reach an adequate dose I am afraid, nothing moves quickly in the world of Thyroid!

Kind regards
