What is the reference range that comes with the result?

We generally see two ranges here for TPO antibodies, one is <34 and one is <60 but I suspect there may be others. So no-one can tell you if it's "normal" (and normal only means within range) unless you give the range as well. If it's higher than the reference range given then the result is positive for antibodies, eg. Result: 50, Range <34.

Hi Seaside thanks for the reply, the reference range is below 60 but online I'm seeing that 50 U/ml is high for that measuring unit ?

It is classed as normal or negative because it is below 60. However, it is high within it's range. As antibodies fluctuate you may very well have an over range result at some point, and you may also have a lower result at some point.

Do you have a diagnosis of a thyroid condition, we don't really know in what context you are asking this question.

I dont have a diagnosed thyroid condition however I do have PCOS and a lot of women with it also have thyroid conditions which is what prompted me to get tested I also had on my blood test a high CRP level (inflammation marker). Its just confusing to me because while the reference range was under 60 online I keep seeing from more "functional" medicine doctors that 50 is a bit high?

Are you taking a reference range you've seen online or is that the range that came with your result? You can only go by the reference range that comes with your result, ranges vary from lab to lab so you have to use the range from your lab.

Did you have TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested as well? That would then be the full thyroid panel and give a complete picture which may be more helpful that just quoting the antibody result.

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

As you say, Hashimoto’s is strongly linked to PCOS

Ask GP to test vitamin levels

You will almost certainly need to test TG antibodies privately as TPO antibodies are classed as negative

NHS only test TG antibodies if TPO antibodies are positive.

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

Thank you slow dragon for replying,

I am borderline anemic and my vitamin D is also low, my b12 is normal, but also had high CRP level and in past blood tests my ANA has comeback borderline positive.

I'm still waiting for some thyroid tests to come back but the rest seem fine however my T3 was 6.1 pmoi/L I'm not sure if that is high or normal.

How low was vitamin D

What dose has GP prescribed

Vitamin D

GP will often only prescribe to bring levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average

Government recommends everyone supplement October to April

What are your actual results and ranges for

Ferritin, folate and B12

Has GP prescribed iron supplements for anaemia

ririabzboo profile image
ririabzboo in reply to SlowDragon

my Iron was a 2.0 U m/l (reference range was 10-30) I was on a couple of different iron supplements but had to stop I was getting really constipated and nothing helped until I was off them I try to eat more red meat now.

my vit D is 32 (reference range is 50-250) I'm on ostelin tablets for it

my b12 is normal 275 (reference range 200-700)

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to ririabzboo

So how much vitamin D is in Ostelin ?

GP should prescribe 1600iu everyday for 6 months

B12 is likely too low.

Have you had folate tested. They work together

B12 under 500 may be too low

Do you have any low B12 symptoms

b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

Was ferritin tested? (Storage form of iron)

Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.

Can you add full iron panel test results
