Hi does anyone have any advice for the best HRT to take with NDT? I have been taking 1.5 grains of Nature Throid for about 5 years but have recently gone into the menopause and trying to find information online and with doctors is painful! I have a telephone appointment with my Endocrinologist in 2 weeks and want to be prepared for it.
Thank you

It depends on whom you ask. My doctor is a so called functional doctor working exclusively with bio-identical transdermal estradiol and micronised progesterone (Utrogestan). She says oral estrogen should be avoided at all cost as it needs to be cleared by the liver and is the reason estrogen replacement got a bad reputation in the first place, as bio-identical, transdermal estradiol does not have the same side effects as synthetic estrogen or CEE (conjugated equine estrogen, from pregnant mares´urine...not sure if the latter is available in Europe, though).
So I have not tried anything else. I like the fact of taking something that´s identical to what my own body produces, though...although I think it can be difficult to get a doctor to prescribe those drugs, as many only know about synthetic HRT.
But whatever you choose, it´s important to combine estrogen with progesterone unless you´ve had a hysterectomy. Progesterone can be taken cyclically (if still having regular periods) or continuously (if it has been at least 12 months since last period).
I realise your situation is different since you´ve had a hysterectomy. I was sorry to hear about your problems.
I really am not qualified to say what would be wise to do if in your situation...all I know is that my doctor told me that women who have not had a hysterectomy should take E and P since E alone can cause a build-up of the endometrium lining...P causes it to shed. I´m sorry, but that´s all I know. The more I read about it, the more I realise sex hormones are complex and should not just be seen as complementary to thyroid hormone treatment...
I take NDT first thing and HRT at night. I had to come off the HRT when a breast lump was found but it was nothing nasty. The hot flushes, soaking the bed, bad temper and BO (even with strongest deodorant) and the wish to kill everyone was a good reason to go back on the HRT and life returned to as normal as it ever is. It is your body and your decision. For me, HRT works.
I am sorry but that did make me laugh but only as I could relate to you! I am starting to feel how I used to feel on synthetic thyroxine and it worries me as I am usually quite laid back but I can feel my hackles rising at the silliest of things and I don't want to turn into a monster! I have just had a blood test so if I do go on HT at least I will have something to compare against......Glad it works for you and thank you for replying!
Hi Fiona - if you haven’t already, take a look at the menopausematters site. Lots of women on there who gave thyroid problems and take hrt. Just post as you gave here and you’ll get lots of info. I’ve just stopped taking it after many years as the oestrogen was making me feel hypo. I did some research and there’s defo a link between oestrogen replacement and thyroid hormones needing bumped. Good luck.
