You need to make sure you are adequately replaced with levo, or some other sort of thyroid hormone replacement. Do you have any lab results to post? What are you taking at the moment?

Are you still only on 25mcg levothyroxine a day? Because if so, then I hate to say it, but it’s very unlikely you’ll have a successful pregnancy.

For a successful pregnancy and, most importantly, a healthy baby, you need thyroid and vitamins regularly retested

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking?

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking?

Many/most people with Hashimoto’s need to be on strictly gluten free diet too

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested.

Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common with Hashimoto’s

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

Come back with new post once you get results...likely they are only testing TSH which is completely inadequate

Many people find Levothyroxine brands are not interchangeable.

Once you find a brand that suits you, best to make sure to only get that one at each prescription.

Watch out for brand change when dose is increased or at repeat prescription.

Many patients do NOT get on well with Teva brand of Levothyroxine. Teva contains mannitol as a filler, which seems to be possible cause of problems. Teva is the only brand that makes 75mcg tablet. So if avoiding Teva for 75mcg dose ask for 25mcg to add to 50mcg or just extra 50mcg tablets to cut in half

Teva and Aristo are the only lactose free tablets

Teva poll

No other medication or supplements at same as Levothyroxine, leave at least 2 hour gap.

Some like iron, calcium, magnesium, HRT, omeprazole or vitamin D should be four hours away

(Time gap doesn't apply to Vitamin D mouth spray)

Wockhart

Yes ...they only make 25mcg tablets

List of hypothyroid symptoms

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_...

Standard starter dose of levothyroxine is 50mcg (unless over 65 years old).

The aim of Levothyroxine is to increase the dose slowly in 25mcg steps upwards until TSH is under 2 (many patients need TSH significantly under one) and most important is that FT4 is in top third of range and FT3 at least half way through range

NHS guidelines on Levothyroxine including that most patients eventually need somewhere between 100mcg and 200mcg Levothyroxine.

nhs.uk/medicines/levothyrox...

Also note what foods to avoid (eg recommended to avoid calcium rich foods at least four hours from taking Levo)

All four vitamins need to be regularly tested and frequently need supplementing to maintain optimal levels - obviously essential to get vitamins optimal BEFORE even considering TTC

I’ve only one child and will be my last. Pregnancy made my thyroid condition worse and it will cause changes throughout and after pregnancy. Others on here are right, vitamins, look at diets that support your thyroid and get your meds optimal not just as the gp say normal.

If your that worried and don’t want to put your body through anymore enjoy the 3 you have. It’s up to you what you decide.

Hi. I have Hashimotos, diagnosed in 1996. I gave birth to my son in 2009. There were no complications. I had an additional blood test in each trimester and I had regular appointments with a consultant gynaecologist. All the very best.

To be honest my diet is poor and I’m overweight and it was the same when I got pregnant but I did try and improve it when I was pregnant.

I’d be really wary of doing anything drastic to lose weight - before I knew about Hashimoto’s I exercised excessively and ate less and very low carb, and I suspect I made myself worse and only shifted a modest amount of weight - not worth all that effort and totally unsustainable lifestyle! Once I stopped exercising, started taking supplements (had tests for deficiencies), and ditched gluten, dairy and soy I started to feel better and lost a bit of weight without effort. But the game changer was getting replacement hormone in the form of levo. Bit of a rollercoaster getting up to the 100mcg I feel better on now - would feel better then a lot worse with each increase, until I got to this point - but checking in with the kind people on here helped me power through and not give up. I now find I can eat a lot more. I don’t eat a lot of carbs and get them from veg predominantly. I don’t eat gluten free replacement products other than rice pasta - just don’t agree with me. And the only exercise I do is walking or occasional yoga with my 4yr old. Once on the 100mcg I’ve found I have slow but steady weight loss, total of 2 stone lost now. I’m saying this as I am in the position of wanting to have another baby once I feel well enough, and all the things I thought were the right things to do just weren’t.

Hi ya huni thank you for your message 😁im so worried as lost a baby at 12 weeks due to this hasimotos my symptoms worsened while I was preg so I wanna make sure my body is werw it needs to be before I go ahead ... how long you had hasimotos hun? X

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to Cassie101

Improving nutrients improves conversion of Ft4 to Ft3

Plus good vitamin levels are essential pre conception

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Even if we don’t start on full replacement dose, vast majority of patients need to increase dose slowly upwards until on full replacement dose

NICE guidelines

nice.org.uk/guidance/ng145/...

1.3.6

Consider starting levothyroxine at a dosage of 1.6 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day (rounded to the nearest 25 micrograms) for adults under 65 with primary hypothyroidism and no history of cardiovascular disease.

BMJ also clear on dose required

Sorry for slow reply, I missed this somehow. So sorry you lost your baby.

I’ve known about Hashimoto’s for just over a year now, but struggled with symptoms from after having my son 5yrs ago. I wonder if even before that to be honest.

How are you getting on now?

I’m sorry to be a Debbie downer here but...why would you want to put yourself and your unborn/born child through a highly likely traumatic experience if you have hypothyroidism and have already had a miscarriage because of it? There is no guarantee your next pregnancy will be an easy or smooth one.

There is a woman friend in my personal life that has hypothyroidism and it’s a more severe case than mine and she almost bled to death during her first time giving birth but, thankfully, her and her child made it. The second one was really hard on her body and she gave birth to her baby prematurely in month 7 and...the baby only lived for a few weeks. After that, she had several miscarriages before she was able to bring her second child into the world. She tried several times after that and had another several miscarriages. It was very hard for her and her husband and the people who cared for her to witness her go through so much trauma.

You already have 3 beautiful children...so why risk it if there’s no guarantee it won’t end badly?

I’m really sorry for being so direct, I am not trying to be harsh or cruel, I just wouldn’t want any woman to go through what my friend did.
