I use to run 8 miles a day before my thyroid was removed. After recovery 6 months, I went back to running, i couldnt do it, my legs felt heavy like lead, i literally couldnt lift my feet. I kept at it and it got worse. 10 years on i havent run since. My heart rate for 5 years after TT was average 45bpm and not because i was fit. Since starting high dose t3 4-5 years ago, my resting HB now 50-60 but just going up the stairs will raise mine to 120! I wear a smart watch so i can track HB & blood pressure.
All my life i thought exercise was the answer to everything, tired-go for a run, anxious-go for a run, angry-go for a run, bored-go for a run. So it has been upsetting for me, i pushed myself for years to keep going, the pain in my feet, ankles, legs, hips was unbearable, i got muscle weakness and wasting from day one.
I am as optimal on my meds as i am going to get but my life as a competitive sports woman was over the min my thyroid was removed sorry not an answer for you xx
Hi, I can relate to you, my heart rate is the same as yours, I had my thyroid destroyed with radioactive iodine,also Heart rate and BP goes off it's head and heart starts missing beats if something alarming happens with the animals on my property far worse than it did before thyroid was destroyed. I take my BP quite often and keep it 120/70 with medication that seems to help most times.
Good afternoon, you may want to grab a cuppa as you've sent me to my happy place aka strava and a spreadsheet. I can sort of answer your question, but backwards.
This is the data from my local parkrun segment on strava. I've picked out the same time of the year as that sort of allows for similar underfoot conditions, it's harder to run when it's soggy and you're sliding around everywhere.
Jan/Feb 2015 to 2018 I had no known health problems, in that I haven't a clue what my thyroid was doing. Most of my parkrun times were under 30 minutes, average HR during the run was usually high 140s to 160s, the odd run falling a bit short.
I started struggling with energy in Feb 2019, the time taken to run parkrun has started to vary a bit more, average HR has dropped, but you'd expect that as the times were slower, but perceived effort has stayed the same (how hard I think I'm running) which doesn't tally with a drop in average HR. Resting HR was low 60s to high 50s at this time.
Beginning of March 2019 resting HR dropped to low 50s high 40s (if you look at the graph it's pretty dramatic). Average exercising HR is pretty similar to Feb, parkrun times are slower, perceived effort is higher, starting to struggle.
April 2019 I was turned away from blood donating as my iron was too low. Resting HR still low.
May 2019 Doc reported iron OK (I had been supplementing) but T4 was 'slightly' (her words) below the normal range and TSH was slightly above the normal range. Retest in 3 months.
August 2019 TSH higher, "wait and see". Resting HR hits 30 every so often.
December 2019 (medichecks) TSH higher
Jan 2020 TSH still high, parkrun times have slowed even more, perceived effort is higher, exercising HR varies a bit more but seems lower than earlier years.
Feb 18th started levothyroxin, 50mg. That next parkrun, I think that's the highest my exercising HR has been for a while!!!
Exercising HR seems to have increased a bit, as does resting HR (I'm not getting it dipping into the 30s).
Still on that dose, NHS has other things to deal with at the moment, I can live with that for a while.
