Erratic heart rate

Hi. I don’t know if anyone can help.....for around an hour today my heart felt quite strange and a few pains in my chest. My heart beat for 3-4 beats and then what I can only describe as paused for a second. Then it would beat again for 3-4 bests and pause. This has been going on for a while, although my heart rate feels normal now but I have chest pains. (Nothing major). I’ve had palpitations since I was a little girl and was rushed into hospital about 8 years ago with a heart rate of 250 beats a minute. This doesn’t feel anything like that but the chest pain does. I had a root canal yesterday too. Could this be thyroid related and my body reacting?

If the anaesthetic used contained adrenaline it's possible that might be something to do with it.

Missing beats is something I get, it's ectopic heartbeats but they're not missing it's actually a premature heartbeat so you get an early heartbeat then a brief pause so it actually feels like a missing heartbeat. I've been experiencing "sporadic tachycardia" and multiple ectopic heartbeats recently and am waiting to see a cardiologist.

I don't know about the chest pains but do you have a pulseoximeter or blood pressure machine that measures heart rate so that you can keep an eye on it? If not, find a second hand clock (online if you don't have one) and count your heart rate. Over 120 you should call 111 or 999.

Hi seaside susie. Yes I have a pulse meter. My pulse is 85 so it’s not high.....and oxygen is a good level. I had a reaction to the anaesthetic a couple of weeks ago where my heart was racing. Never had it before. This is very different. It’s one of those that you just don’t know what to do. :-(. I don’t want to call 999 as I would feel silly but I understand chest pain can be serious.

Low iron can speed up the heart and mess with the rhythm.

Low T3 can do the same.

Low magnesium also affects the heart.

Do you know if you have any of these problems?

I don’t know about t3 as this wasn’t tested in my last bloods. Never had magnesium tested and iron was ok when lasted tested :-)

Magnesium testing is not very reliable. The body needs magnesium in every cell, but when it is in short supply it prefers to keep the magnesium in the blood stream at good levels by stealing it from other cells.

So blood testing usually shows magnesium to be in range, even when it is very deficient.

If the body has too much magnesium it is expelled via the kidneys. If the kidneys are not healthy then this can cause a problem, and excess magnesium could build up. But in people with kidneys which are in reasonable health, there is little risk that I know of in supplementing magnesium without testing.

Google "best and worst forms of magnesium", read a few of the links, and select a magnesium supplement that looks good to you. Take about 300 - 350 mg per day, and see if it helps. Take it 4 hours away from thyroid meds.

Hi, All I know is that if one really wants to get to the bottom of what their irregular heart rate event is, getting a EKG while it is occurring can be diagnostic. However you don't to be driving yourself in order to obtain one, as driving is considered a stressful activity. Did you get a phone number to call after the procedure if there was any problems or concerns? It sounds as if you do have concerns & should give them a jingle. If it is off hours a answering service should connect you with whoever is covering for the night.

As you have Hashimoto's (high antibodies) are you on strictly gluten free diet?

This can/may improve ectopic heart beat and brain fog

Yes. Have been gluten free for nearly a year :-)

Anxiety or being over medicated (even temporarily) can cause this. I suffered the same symptoms a couple of years ago, I was over medicated which also caused anxiety.

My tsh is very low....I’m not anxious though. It may well be that I’m overmedicated then at the moment :-(

I wasn't over by much and I didn't feel over medicated but my blood test showed my T3 was over so I reduced by 1/2 a grain (on NDT) and that was enough to sort me out.
