Aristo levothyroxine?

DoeStewart profile image
110 Replies

Hi everyone. My husband just picked up my script from the pharmacy for my Levo. I have just opened the bag and the brand I have been dispensed is one I haven't had before - box is Levothyroxine Aristo 100mg tablets. On the side of the box it shows Marketing Authorisation Holder as Aristo Pharma GmbH, Berlin, Germany . Has anybody else had this brand or know anything about it?

Have you checked the patient information leaflet:

6. Contents of the pack and other information

What Levothyroxine Aristo contains

- The active substance is anhydrous levothyroxine sodium.

Each tablet contains 25, 50, 100 and 200 micrograms of anhydrous levothyroxine sodium respectively.

- The other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, maize starch, heavy magnesium oxide, sodium starch glycolate type A and magnesium stearate.

Slightly different excipients from usual UK brands, I don't think I've seen "heavy magnesium oxide" before. Magnesium oxide can have a laxative effect but that is probably with a much higher dose than would be in one Levo tablet.

Thank you SeasideSusie, just reading the leaflet now. I know I can't tolerate Teva but have never tried this new one. I'm due to go away 18th March so will use my old brand up and not start this till I come home incase it gives me adverse effects. I have never seen this brand before in the 30+ years since I started on Levo, I wonder why this has all of a sudden been dispensed. Money saving probably 🤔

Sounds like a good plan, don't rock the boat with your holiday due.

I have a lot of faith in German brands of lots of things, including some supplements, so maybe this is going to turn out well and be better than your normal one.

Do let us know in due course. It will be interesting to see if anyone else has this brand dispensed.

Yes my partner collected mine today and I have the Aristo one too, I live in the South Wales valleys and I know of many women with hypothyroidism here

DoeStewart profile image
DoeStewart in reply to CelticElf

Hi CelticElf, hope you get on OK with them. I have just collected my next script and again have received a brand I have never been dispensed before 'Northstar'. I have looked them up on Helvellas list of Levothyroxine manufacturers just to make sure they're not Teva. Will see how I get on with these. Good luck with your Aristo and keep safe.

Just a heads up :Northstar sell Teva Levothyroxine 25 micrograms in Northstar livery - check the side of the packet. Northstar dont make their own 25mg

Hi I’ve just had a refill of my prescription of Levothyroxine and when I’ve checked , my local Whitworths have dispensed Aristo 100mg for the first time.I’ve been struggling on with Northstar, feeling very unwell for quite some time and reading the forum about different brands affecting people in different ways makes me quite wary.

On the box it’s from. German producer.

Any advice please

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply to TVOReason

TVOReason

Have you tried the Aristo? I don't think I've seen any adverse comments about it, Teva is the one that many members have problems with.

If you've been "struggling on" with Northstar it sounds as though something isn't right and maybe a change of brand is what you need.

If I were you I'd make a new post of your own, describe why you are "struggling on" with Northstar, post your current test results including the reference ranges, and let's see if we can help.

Thanks for your reply I have read the posts about Aristo and I will try it and if I improve I will do a post on the difficulties I’ve had with Northstar

Regarding Northstar, I encourage you to report ALL side effects and bad experiences with ALL medicines including vaccines and diagnostic testing kits. In the UK, use the Yellow Card reporting system to inform the MHRA about any medicine issue you experience - or even suspect.

If in doubt, shout!

There is a company listed on companies house with that name.

Here is a link

This is in the public domain btw

If you look at the companies history they used to be CEB Pharma Ltd but changed their name.

A lot of companies fold and then start again with a new name. Could be tax purposes or something else. I am just speculating now but I do have my own company so I do know what happens.

Ah ok, fair enough Lora7again, makes sense. I normally have Mercury Pharma or Actavis and these suit me very well, will just have to see how these new ones do.

Are you in a position to scan or photograph the box?

I'd really like to know the full details. I usually unfold the box and scan/photo as one. You can see what I mean here:

dropbox.com/s/7tte490umnz6s...

If you are, either email it to louise.roberts@thyroiduk.org or contact me by Private Message.

I have already checked the MHRA site (where they should have details of ALL products) and cannot find it. So it is very odd that a UK pharmacy has supplied it to you.

Thanks to DoeStewart, I have added an image of this product to:

It has a UK licence - PL 40546/0159 - but no PAR nor PIL on the MHRA site where they should be.

The Summary of Product Characteristics document is available here:

Of course, being me, I have also raised the issue with the MHRA.

Hi wondering how you got on with the Aristo. I’ve just got a new prescription and it is Aristo. I usually have accord 100mcg & wockhardt 25mcg. This is a new one on me, too. Concerned as I cannot tolerate TEVA & get very ill. I’m in a good place right now so concerned about new manufacturer. Stressful enough without this! So let me know how it’s going please. Thanks.

DoeStewart profile image
DoeStewart in reply to K80BCR

Hi there, sorry can't comment on Aristo yet, I am finishing an old box of Mercury Pharma off. I was due to go on holiday and didn't want to risk taking the new brand incase it didn't suit me but as holidays are a no go now I am going to start the Aristo tomorrow. I too was extremely ill with Teva so am concerned about starting something I've not had before. I became ill very quickly with Teva so will monitor carefully and as soon as any unwelcome symptoms occur I will get a new prescription. Are both of your doses the Aristo brand? If you are starting your meds at the same time then we should both let others know how we get on via this forum. Good luck to you and fingers crossed.....

Hi how did you get on with Aristo?

DoeStewart profile image
DoeStewart in reply to Owleyes

Hi there, I got on OK with them, didn't have any adverse effects. I would say they aren't my favourite though as the tablets were chalky and dry to swallow. I only got them on that one script( 2 months worth). was back to Mercury Pharma the next time. I mostly get Accord now as MP seems to be in short supply but I am fine on either of these. I hope you do OK on the Aristo - good luck to you.

RoniB profile image

I've written on here about Teva which I can't tolerate and I have now been given Aristo. They are horrible to take and they disolve on my tongue. Today's was the worst yet and I have an almost burning sensation my throat. I am not going to take any more and will request that this brand is added to Teva at my pharmacy as a "do not dispense" item.

DoeStewart profile image
DoeStewart in reply to RoniB

I cant tolerate Teva either and have a "do not dispense" on my pharmacy records. I do remember other members saying the tablets melted on their tongues etc..but I never had that problem, I just found them dry and chalky to swallow. You can get another script from your GP surgery if you tell them you have been dispensed a brand you can't tolerate and stop taking the Aristo straight away? I hope you get sorted out.

I just received Aristo too. I've been three weeks without levothyroxine (as all that has been available is TEVA and I react badly to that). I'll start taking it tomorrow and hope that it is OK. Also shortage of liothyronine round about Glasgow

I am now 8 days without levothyroxine as the pharmacy just keep telling me that my prescription hasn't come in yet. Can you please advise if you are getting the Aristo brand through a high street pharmacy? Thanks

helen_m profile image

Hi lolajone, I'm getting my prescriptions now from an independent pharmacy. I was having no joy with chains like Boots or Rowlands. They would say they could give me non TEVA liothyronine then it would arrive and be TEVA. Same with levothyroxine. When I got in touch with them recently, they were willing to work a bit harder to get medication I could tolerate

DoeStewart in reply to lolajone

Hi there - I get my Aristo from an independent Pharmacy. Are you saying your prescription is 8 days overdue and you have had no Levo in that time? Can you collect your prescription and take it to a pharmacy of your choice? I dont understand why your prescription is taking so long if the GP surgery are sending it to them electronically?

lolajone profile image
lolajone in reply to DoeStewart

Yes that is what I'm saying. I've had none for 8 days now, online renewal was done 6 April. And they couldn't give a scoobie. The pharmacy is attached to the GP surgery, cant ring them direct, can't go in, getting really annoyed. Its a special order due to intolerances to fillers, so no good going to the high street pharmacies, never had any problems with supply until the last few months. That's why I'm wondering if this would be an alternative.

DoeStewart profile image
DoeStewart in reply to lolajone

That is an awful situation for you to be in. Can you telephone your GP surgery and advise them of the delay in getting your Levo? Maybe they can give you a further script for say 3 months so that the pharmacy has time to get the correct make in and you won't have to worry for a while. What make do you normally have?

helen_m profile image
helen_m in reply to DoeStewart

Sorry, meant to add. My surgery automatically renews the prescription but the independent pharmacy goes and picks it up. It's not sent electronically, as far as I'm aware

Just finished 1 month on ARISTO and I feel awful. Waited for a while to see if my symptoms settled down, but they have not. Just waiting for the GP to phone me back actually. Bit worried as the just read the Warnings and Precaution section (should have done before but only checked the side effects section) it says to check with Dr before taking if you have had an underactive thyroid for a while (mines been 10 years is that a while?) and if you are over 50 - which I am).

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to Animal96

The wording is poor but I don't think they mean "Check with your doctor if you have been taking another levothyroxine at the same dose for an underactive thyroid for a long time."

I know what you mean about the TEVA, it took me awhile to figure out what was going on . I was so thankful for this site as it was here I learned about TEVA. We must be allergic to the mannitol. Fortunately the Aristo has no mannitol but there’s this heavy magnesium oxide. We’ll see. Let me know how you get on. I’ll let you know also. All the best!

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to K80BCR

If I were you, I would consider changing over to the Aristo now - while you still have some Accord left.

Should you not get on with them, despite several people saying they have found them OK, you would still have at least a few days of Accord left you could revert to. Hopefully even those few days would give you some breathing room to get a replacement/exchange organised?

You can see that heavy magnesium oxide is, really, just magnesium oxide of a very precise specification - look here: sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/pr...

It is denser than some other magnesium oxide. I think that if you were manufacturing tablets, you would want the ingredients to be very consistent in terms both of chemical formulation and physical form. You wouldn't want to switch between icing sugar and granulated sugar! But they are both sugar.

(Yes, I know they use an anti-caking agent in icing sugar but I was trying quickly to come up with a graphic example.)

DoeStewart profile image
DoeStewart in reply to helvella

I find them OK, the 100mg tablets are bigger than my normal make and they are dry so feels like no coating on them. I have almost finished a months worth and so far so good.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to DoeStewart

That is good news indeed.

None of the UK levothyroxine tablets is actually coated. But those, for example - like Wockhardt, which have a lot of sugar, don't seem as dry as those with little or none! :-)

DoeStewart profile image
DoeStewart in reply to helvella

Ah OK, thats good to know. I usually have Actavis or Mercury Pharma which are much smaller tablets. I'm just glad that the Aristo hasn't had the side effects of Teva.

helvella profile image

I would be perfectly happy if I get Aristo dispensed for my next prescription.

Ludicrous basis, but I have already had experience of two German makes (Aliud and Henning) - and they were fine.

Yes it happened to me when I went to collect my repeat prescription 2 weeks ago the pharmacist initially gave me by mistake Teva which I can not tolerate and there is a note on my records about this and I asked for Actavis the one I have been taken for so long now they gave me this new Levothyroxine Aristo saying that it was the only levothyroxine different from Teva they had in stock. So far the only thing I have noticed is causing me this new levothyroxine is soft poop and on and off hot hands which I think it could be a side effect of the 2 types magnesium it has as excipients.

Good luck to you with this new levothyroxine.

helvella profile image
helvellaAdministratorThyroid UK in reply to egcoles

Do bear in mind that the actual amount of magnesium is still tiny! :-)

A tablet probably weighs a few tens of milligrams. It is relatively hard to find a magensium supplement which is even as low as 100 milligrams and many are lots of hundreds of milligrams.

If it is working, I'd not be concerned at the disappearance issue! :-)

Aristo is a long-established make in Germany. There are quite a few other options there so, if they were not pretty good, people could easily swap to one of the other makes. (Of course, we are all individuals and some of us might do well on one make that others dislike. And vice versa.) I have taken two other German makes and found them absolutely excellent.

I have just got my new prescription and mine are Aristo too - never heard of them before now. I am currently on Mercury Pharma ones, and not sure if these are making me feel absolutely terrible. I have also had North Star in the past, no idea why they chop and change brands so often in chemists. Cheapest cost probably. I have had more brands of Levo dispensed by the pharmacy since lockdown than I have had in the 30+ years that I've been taking it. I seem to get a different brand each time I collect my medication (2 monthly). I got Mercury Pharma this time but I've had them before and know they suit me. If you think the Mercury Pharma are not suiting you then I wouldn't take another months worth ?

I have the same symptoms as you and been on these for a couple of weeks now.

I have worse body aches than normal and dreadful joint pain in addition to the dizziness and feeling like I need to slump.

I was trying to work out if it was these or something else, so thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you are suffering, and hope you will be feeling better soon. My depression and anxiety have worsened as well, but not sure if it's down to Aristo, as been feeling like this over a year now. If only chemists gave us one brand to stick to, I think the Northstar ones suited me best, but its like a lottery which ones you receive each time.

Hi, just been given the same brand myself, was hopeful for an added wonderful ingredient that would send my energy levels through the roof.....alas.....no such luck!!

No afraid not - the day they make a Levo with those benefits, hell will freeze over.

I sort of feel my body is missing out as these dissolve so quickly on my tongue before I've had a chance to swallow them, the jury is still out on how they fare.

I never had that problem with them to be honest and they didn't make me feel any worse or better. I have had a few different brands of Levo supplied to me since Lockdown but only had the Aristo for one prescription. Good luck with them.

Hi there, so sorry you are feeling unwell on the Aristo brand of Levothyroxine. I personally didn't have any adverse effects to that brand, the only brand that doesn't suit me is Teva. If you think its this new brand giving you these symptoms then I would contact your GP and advise them, you will need a new prescription. Also inform the pharmacy were you have your script dispensed, they can put it on your records so that you don't get that brand again. I also filled a yellow card in online, it allows you to say what effects this medication had on you. How long have you been taking the Aristo brand?

Hi doestewart I had same brand 3 weeks ago for the first time in 12 years. After taking it for just over 2 weeks I stopped as was making me feel sick and giving me headaches.. took it back to chemist where the pharmacist changed it straight away back to my normal brand.. we should not be changed from one brand to another.. me personally I would take it back and swap it to your normal brand.. hope this helps you.

Hi there, glad you have sorted your Levo out. I had no problem with Aristo, only had it for one prescription. The only brand I could not tolerate was Teva which made me quite unwell and I filled in a yellow card for this. Fortunately I now get Mercury Pharma each script which suits me very well.

I've been on Aristo for two months and feel simply exhausted. I can only blame the brand change and feel wholly fed up. Might have to give that online pharmacy a try and just want the same brand. I just want to be able to wake up feeling like i have actually slept for 9 hours, but feeling like I haven't slept at all.

I always suggest the if you find a medicine unsatisfactory, you do a Yellow Card report to the MHRA (see Pinned posts).

Boots mostly supply Almus - which is Accord. And Lloyds mostly supply Northstar which, in 50 and 100 microgram tablets, is also Accord. (Though the 25 microgram Northstar is Teva.,)

Hi there, make sure you tell the pharmacy that you normally get your script from to mark it on your records that you don't want Aristo brand. May be worthwhile filling the yellow card in on line to report your symptoms on this brand, many of us did this with Teva as many couldn't tolerate it. Is there nowhere local that has the brand you require?

Hi there, well I only got Aristo on the one script so 2 months worth, after that I was back to either MP or Accord. I didn't have a problem with Aristo but I do like MP or Accord, they are my preference. The only brand I have had problems with is Teva, left me bed ridden and so ill. If you feel the brand isn't suiting you then I would get onto GP surgery and obtain new script. If you use same pharmacy each time then ask for it to be put on your records that you don't want that brand. I also filled yellow card in online to show the effects I had from the Teva brand.

Ok thank you I've only been on 5 days so I don't know wether to give it few more days I've had react to tevo and accorrd it was horrible side effects I experienced but thank you

Yes could be something else causing the effects, maybe see how you go. I had taken about 3 weeks of Teva until I put two and two together and read up on the amount of people showing side effects. You could make a seperate post of your own so more people see it, there maybe more folks who can answer you about effects on that brand.
