If you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), treatment may be delayed until this problem is treated. This is because having an underactive thyroid can lead to an increased cholesterol level, and treating hypothyroidism may cause your cholesterol level to decrease, without the need for statins. Statins are also more likely to cause muscle damage in people with an underactive thyroid.
I have high cholesterol due to my thyroid and hereditary cholesterol disease. I’ve been put on Fenofibrate because statins didn’t work and they increase muscle pain. Statins aren’t the best solution for us with hypothyroidism. It might be best if you are referred to lipid clinic and have a blood test for high levels of lipoprotein (lp)a. I’m intolerant to a lot of medications as many of us have this with hypothyroidism.so I just keep trying meds till I find the right one. 6.9 level is relatively high.
Dr Kendrick is worth a look, he has written 3 books and has a blog. High cholesterol is not a problem, low cholesterol is. Those with high cholesterol tend to live longer. Statins can have nasty side effects, one of which is diabetes.
