Thyroiditis usually just means inflammation of the thyroid, usually caused by autoimmune attack. It's the most common reason for hypothyroidism I think.

This condition was mentioned in last week's episode of Doc Martin. The patient's condition was a high pulse rate.

How relevant that was should be compared to a confirmed case of myxedema which was treated with Levothyroxine! Every doctor must know that this myxedema should be treated with Liothyronine as this is always mentioned when recommendations for the use of this hormone is discussed.

Myxoedema coma, or more accurately, myxoedema crisis, is generally treated by intravenous liothyronine; but the term myxoedema was, and sometimes still is used interchangeably with hypothyroidism ever since it was coined by Ord back in the C19th, and doesn't therefore require T3 as a generality.
