Can a thyroid change?

Hi, I've been hypothyroid for 8 years now and have been relatively stable. Recently though, I'm permanently hot, can't sleep and my temper is that of a teenager. I'm certainly not menopausal (that ship sailed long ago) so can a hypo change to a hyper? I know it's crazy and a long shot, but I'm trying to eliminate possibles before throwing myself on the mercies of the NHS.

No. If you are hypo - meaning that your thyroid cannot make enough hormone - it's not suddenly going to go into over-drive and make too much - hyper. However, have you had your antibodies tested? You could have Hashi's and be having what is called a Hashi's 'hyper' swing, where the dying cells dump their stock of hormone (and remember TSH, T4 and T3 are hormones) into the blood cause FT4/3 to rise sharply and TSH to rise.

That said, being hot, sleepless and irritable can also be hypo symptoms and maybe you just need an increase in dose.

How long were you taking Teva before you realised it was upsetting you?

You probably need to get FULL Thyroid and vitamin testing 6-8 weeks minimum after changing back to previous brand

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised or if under medicated

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins
