Angina while I’m carbimazole?

Has anyone experienced angina/chest pain while on carbimazole? I’m used to the palpitations obviously as a symptom of hyperthyroid but past few days there’s been pains that are different and today it’s been non stop chest pains that I realised felt similar to angina (never had it before but I studied nursing so I can recognise the symptoms) then when I searched about the relation to carbimazole all I could find was it saying that patients should be warned about the onset of angina, however it didn’t say what to do or if it’s a reason to stop the meds.

Has anyone experienced this?

Hi,

I have been on Carbimazole since February. A couple of weeks ago I was getting terrible chest pain radiating round to my back every evening . I didn’t know what it was. All I had done differently was reduce the amount of propranolol I was taking ( as directed by Endo). If I took a ‘gaviscon’ type medication it dulled the pain. It went as suddenly as it came on after 10 days.

Hope you feel better soon.

Low iron, ferritin, vitamin D, folate and B12 are all very common with Graves or Hashimoto's

Have you had all of these tested?

Low iron can give chest pain

See GP to check out any possible heart issues too

Have you definitely got High TSI or TRab antibodies to confirm Graves' disease?

Yes confirmed and no problems with heart until started these meds

See Gp and insist on FULL Thyroid and vitamin testing. Essential to test FT3 and FT4 not just TSH

Carbimazole may have lowered FT3 and FT4 too much

Likely low vitamins.

When were vitamin levels lasted tested?

Can you add results and ranges

What vitamin supplements do you currently take?

Also results on TSI or TRab antibodies test

Are you on strictly gluten free diet? Helps thousands with Hashimoto's or Graves

While still eating high gluten diet ask GP for coeliac blood test first or buy test online for under £20, just to rule it out first

Assuming test is negative you can immediately go on strictly gluten free diet

(If test is positive you will need to remain on high gluten diet until endoscopy, maximum 6 weeks wait officially)

Trying gluten free diet for 3-6 months. If no noticeable improvement then reintroduce gluten and see if symptoms get worse

Thanks for your reply! Thankfully I’ve had everything tested and frequently, I don’t live in uk so I don’t have to go through gp’s I can have a consultation with endo whenever I need it which is great. Husbands a surgeon so he takes care of my blood work and can request most of what I need checked so I have all my labs. I just got blood work done this week which is the first since starting carbimazole a month ago so I’m waiting on that coming out to see what’s happening but I can already tell from the fact that no symptoms have got better that everything’s still high as it has been now since January.

Unfortunately I’m not gluten free at the moment and it’s not that easy where I am and very expensive but I’m moving to Canada in a week and my goal is to attempt to be gluten free once I’m settled there and can focus on nutrition. It’s a hectic time just now with moving that there’s just no chance.

Stress can be a significant factor in Thyroid disease

Good luck with you move and hopefully your life can then calm down a bit

Yes it’s been a stressful couple of months. Looking forward to things calming down but won’t be until July when we move into apartment and hopefully can find good endo there in Canada and see what next step is.
