Caroline, you haven't put your past thyroid history onto your Profile, you only have your name.
I've read your first post and note that you were only on 25mcg of levothyroxine. That dose is so low I doubt it has been be helpful - unless of course you have a heart condition and the doctor is being cautious.
We should begin on 50mcg of levothyroxine (also known as T4). It is an inactive hormone and has to convert to T3 which is the Active hormone and is needed in our millions of T3 receptor cells.
Your doctor should be increasing your dose of levo every six weeks after a blood test. I believe you've been given advice on how best to get the best possible result on a blood test.
I think it would be best if your doctor increases your dose of levo every six weeks, the aim being a TSH of 1 or lower (many doctors are completely unknowledgeable about anything to do with the thyroid gland and may make us more unwell).
T3 is not a miracle hormone although it is the active one. If you begin to source your own there may become difficulties for you at times when it isn't available and it is difficult to get a prescription in the UK as the NHS has withdrawn this due to the 6,000% rise in costs by the pharmaceutical companies.
You should inform your doctor you need an increase of 25mcg of levo every six weeks until your TSH is 1 or lower. You have to educate your doctor as many seem completely unable to understand how the gland works to give us the energy for everything to work in unison and our heart and brain need the most.
The aim is a TSH of 1 or lower and GP should increase dose until you reach this. Symptoms can be slow to resolve if undermedicated.
Also your B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate also have to be optimum as deficiences can also cause disabling symptoms.
I will close your post as no information with regard to sourcing T3 or prescription medication is permitted on the forum. If a member has the information and wants to notify you they will send you a private message. Please be mindful that T3 doesn't need to be converted and some find a difficulty in reaching a dose which helps. 25mcg of T3 (liothyronine) is equal to around 100mcg of levothyroxine.
Thank you very much for the supportive post. I have just experience another crash and feel terrible.
I understand and the majority of those on this forum have had similar problems and its a pity doctors do not seem to have a clue. Most are so very ignorant I'm afraid, and only seem to take account of the TSH and if it is somewhere in the range, the assumption is that we're on sufficient. It is not surprising that many on this forum find their own way through a maze with advice from those who've suffered (which isn't of their own making).
If you can afford your own blood test, I will give you a link and they are home finger prick blood tests so make sure you are well-hydrated a couple of days before blood draw. Method for blood test:-
1. The earliest blood draw - fasting (you can drink water).
2. Allow a gap of 24 hours between last dose of hormones and test and take afterwards.
Request:-
TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3 and thyroid antibodies.
Doctor should test B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate. All vits/minerals are important and should be optimum.
