Has anyone had a test for iodine levels?

Hi all,

just wondering has anyone been tested for iodine levels? And if so what is the best test to go for? I have heard they can be unreliable.

Thank you! 😊

The skin patch test is unreliable.

The loading test is also said to be unreliable:

I have done the non-loading urine test from Genova Diagnostics which measures existing levels.

I did it, with a load of other tests when I was trying to get to the bottom of my problem a few years ago, to see if I was deficient and it came back exactly mid-range so I had a baseline. A practioner I was consulting with at the time put me on a multivitamin which contained iodine even though I pointed out that I wasn't deficient. She said it would be OK because "it only contained 150mcg". I retested a few months later and my level had gone from 150 to 250 (100-199) so as far as I'm concerned it's a good and accurate test.

If you want to use Genova you have to name ThyroidUK as your practioner, details here

The test order code is END25, on page 3 here thyroiduk.org/tuk/testing/G...

Did you feel okay taking the multivitamin with iodine in it?

Thank you!

I was very unwell at the time with multiple problems, I blindly followed the practioner's advice. Not only did it contain iodine which I didn't need, it contained iron which would have affected the absorption of the other ingredients. I know better now, I don't suggest anyone takes a multivitamin, they're not worth it. Test the necessary core vitamins - Vit D, B12, Folate, Ferritin - and supplement what's necessary. If you find that you have iodine deficiency then supplement under the guidance of a practioner experienced in the iodine protocol because there are cofactors that should also be taken.
