Helping Our Bodies Heal

IfIWereAButterfly profile image

When I was a baby, a drunk driver hit my parents' car. I suffered a concussion, shutting down my endocrine system--low thyroid, low cortisol, inactive pituitary, and on, and on. Nobody caught it for years, and then they had no real solutions.

Well, if it is to be, it's up to me and all that, so I hit the books, then the internet. I learned how to heal many things--one step at a time. Years later, I realized that what I had learned could help others, so I started writing about it.

So far, my learning journey has taken close to 40 years, and I'm still learning. I don't think anybody will ever completely understand the fabulously complicated human body, but I'm working on it.

All this learning has made me an optimist. Our bodies want to heal, and "all" we have to do is figure out what our body needs to get the job done. In fact, if our bodies get even a hint that we're finally catching on, they go for the gold.

I began researching my illnesses when I was 44 (I will be 64 in July this year) after stumbling on how trauma/stress affect the body.

Out of necessity I became a Resource Detective along the way and applying what I have learned in order to improve rhe quality of my life. It has been quite the adventure.

Currently researching what it means to have developed a goiter. Hoping this community can assist me.

My dreams have no expiration date!

I love your final statement and with your permission will put it on a tote bag so that people can see that even in our 60s we still have dreams 🙂

Also, I wish the general medical community recognised the life-changing effects of stress on our physical health. I had to go to a private endo to get proper support and advice. Luckily I found this site and was given details of specialists in my area, and lots of support, for which I will be eternally grateful as it was the start of a slow, but definite improvement. It was good to realise i’m not mad or alone (although it would be great if we didn’t need to become our own researchers). Also worth not having a holiday for 2 years to finally be given useful advice.

Still in a stressful living situation, which I hope will be over by the end of the summer, and still dreaming.

Wishing you luck in your further research.

Feel free - it's liberating, isn't?

Thanks for requesting permission, very thoughtful!

That's the words from Bette Dowdel site, her words and story. I hope it's ok you lifting it? Don't quite know why you have without the source.

What do you mean? I am not citing anyone 's experience but my own. I learned of the concept of becoming my own Resource Detective while taking a course locally here in Ontario Canada called Take Charge: How To Live A Healthy Life With Chronic Illness - it is a course that originates out of Stanford University.

I have never heard the name you have mentioned and you are out of line assuming that I am using someone else's story as my own. In fact, it disturbs me that you would assume that.

I’m very sorry. My mistake.

You have nothing to apologise for. You replied to IfIWereAButterfly and PNIAuthor60 was mistaken, thinking that you had replied to her.

Her response indicates with a tiny arrow "to PNIAuthor"

Only her reply which said "I’m very sorry. My mistake." has the arrow pointing to your name.

Her original reply which started with "That's the words from Bette Dowdel site, her words and story......" was not in response to your message, there is no arrow "to PNIAuthor" on that reply as it was in response to IfIWereAButterfly's opening message on the thread.

Marymary7 was not replying to you, she was responding to the opening post written by IfIWereAButterfly. If she was replying to you then it would have said

"Marymary7 .. in reply to PNIAuthor60"

and her message would have been indented below your own. See how my reply to you illustrates this.

So I'm afraid you've jumped to a wrong conclusion.

You say in your post

Currently researching what it means to have developed a goiter. Hoping this community can assist me.

If you would like to start your own thread then members with a similar experience will respond.

I agree, our bodies do forgive us if we let them heal.

I have always been on medication since a baby, with no real problems until I was in my 30's then a new GP came into my life unfortunately and then everything went wrong.

I have had to fight for my health including dramatic weight gain and heart failure, amongst a few. I have proven the "professionals" wrong. So after many moons and a lot of heart ache literally, I am now on the road to recovery.

I have no heart problems now and the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension has practically gone, only a "element" evidently which has a question mark over it. No lung disease as diagnosed originally due to severe pneumonia and right heart failure.

My new battle is to get the weight off now that I gained during my journey and regaining some mobility back despite the sciatica I have now.

I think personally you have to help yourself heal and listen to your body, But after the struggles I have had and there have been many, I am surely coming back to the old me.

Being on the right dose of medication makes a big difference and ironically for me, that was my original dose plus some T3.

Thank you for sharing.

Take care :)
