Hello new member. 53 years old with diagnosed large nodule awaiting to see consultant sometime never. I'm also a migraine experiencer, which has seriously ramped up in last two years, currently taking amitriptyline and sumatripan. Keep attending docs when having bad time but seem to get nowhere fast. Bloods taken twice but come back 'no further action', so hoping this group will help clarify my questions.
Hi. New member : Hello new member. 53 years old... - Thyroid UK
Hi. New member
Hi and Welcome ! Without the actual results with ranges - members would be guessing - so post your latest results and let's see what is going on. Low Iron can sometimes be the cause of migraine ... How are your levels of B12 - Folate - Ferritin and ViD ?
Check to see if your other meds are contra-indicated with thyroid meds - if you are taking any ?
I haven't the foggiest what the blood results read as my docs do not inform me, I always felt it was strange. I also assumed that as the same doc that prescribed my meds also Confirmed my thyroid nodule that they would be ok. Am I OK to ask for these details?
Reading through the posts here - over 100,000 - you will read on a daily basis that we must take control and request all test results with ranges. You are legally entitled to them and many surgeries now have on-line access - so worth enquiring. I live in Crete so here we keep all our records and all test results - seems to work !
These are the Tests you need - TSH - FT4 - FT3 and Thyroid Anti-bodies TPO & Tg. Also results for B12 - Folate - Ferritn and VitD are needed. These tests are not automatically done and need to be requested.
The above link takes you to the main website of this Forum where you can read and learn everything THYROID ! Of course you can return and post at anytime and members will assist and support. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in 2005 and have spent hours reading and learning from others - it is the key to wellness ...
Got my blood results as suggested, can't pretend I understand them but looks like they fall into normal range :
TSH 2. 4 mU/L
TPO 18 iu/mL
TG 0.6 mmol/L
B12 495 ng/L
Folate 9.7 ug/L
Ferritn 26.1ug/L
No mention of FT3 FT4 or vit D
You say you do not understand your results - well I gave you a link above to help you understand more about the Thyroid. FT4 & T3 are important as they reveal how much hormone is produced by the thyroid and how well T4 converts into Active T3.
As mentioned in my earlier reply - low iron could be the cause of your migraine. Your Ferritin is low ( tored iron in the liver ) & needs to be around 70. Ask GP for a full Iron Profile and Full Blood Count to check for anaemia.
When posting results always add ranges - figures after results.
Is that TG or TgAb (Thyroglobulin or Thyglobulin Antibodies ) ?
You haven't given the normal range for each test. However it does look as though you don't have a positive result for Hashimoto's which is the most common cause of Hypothyroidism. If you can get hold of the Ultrasound scan report from 7 months ago or ask GP was any Thyroiditis found - or was the only finding the one nodule.
When is your next scan going to be? You could ask for Thyroid & Parathyroids to be scanned.
Did you have Bone blood tests (Calcium and Phosphorus )? Do you have results to share?
Did you have any other Antibodies tested?
Did you have any other hormones tested?
Have you seen or been referred to any other Specialist?
As Marz says You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.
UK GP practices are supposed to offer online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.
In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet
Alternatively ring receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.
They can no longer charge for printing out, rules changed after May 25th 2018
You need recent results and ranges for TSH, FT3 and FT4, plus have you also had both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested.
Come back with new post once you get results and ranges
