Hashimoto’s and Fasting

Hello everyone. Just wondering if anyone here has fasted and successfully improved their thyroid health. I am considering doing a 5 to 7 day water fast, but I am unsure if it is safe or not. I heard that fasting can improve thyroid conditions, but I’m a little skeptical still. I would hate to start fasting, then my body decides to attack something else 😥 Do any of you fast? Or have any advice?

Fasting is not a good idea for hypos whether they have Hashi's or not. They need the calories and they need the nutrients that they get from a constant level of nutrition. As I see it, fasting can only make things worse.

How can going without nutrition improve thyroid health? What specifically did you read? I imagine that if it impressed you such that you are going to go without food for 7 days, you are referring to valid research rather than blogger articles?

Thank you. I came across this idea online in a few places. Just looking for something to make me feel better.....

I haven't done one that long - only 24 hours - but regularly do intermittent fasting. But I don't have hashis (central hypo).

I do intermittent fasting combined with a very low carb high fat diet. It has made a huge difference to my overall health, I only do 24-30 hour fasts, 3 times a week I have not yet done any longer. I am trying to pluck up the courage to do longer, but it goes against 55 years of never “missing a meal training” but I have had no problems with the intermittent fast. I have only been doing this for six months but have had no negative outcomes.....

Thank you. That’s awesome. I think that if I do decide to fast, intermittent would be my best option at first.

I've been hypo for probably 17- 20 yrs (offically diagn 15 yrs ago, I'm 53) Dign last yr with Hashio's (77 tpo#). I'm doing a water, mate, sm amount black organic half dec coffee & sea salt acv fast, 67 hrs in. I'm seeing if autophogy will help. There's some myths on women & thyroid fasting out there, have to do your reseach. Dr Fung says it's ok, so to me, it's ok. Been gf for yrs and super clean organic eater and still have it so this is my diff approach...

BTW rutin and LDN have cut my antibodies down to 44 in 3-4 mos!

Thank you for replying. Wow! That sounds interesting. That’s amazing that your antibodies dropped that significantly so fast! Please let me know how your fast turns out. Meanwhile, I’m still researching and trying to decide wether or not I’m going to try it.......

In the past I have done 5:2 very successfully and I found it fab. In fact I converted a few of my friends onto it.

I have been hashi hypo for about 14 years with no issues however, since I became unwell in sept 17, I have tried it once and it made me very unwell again.

I am doing much better now and I am seriously toying with the idea of starting again but I still feel as though I have no “reserve” so I’m a bit skeptical.

I’m not sure how fasting impacted on the adrenal aspect of me being ill, I’ll suspect it had quite a major effect but as this is now sorted, I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Hi, rubbish tbh!

Rubbish in that I cannot stick to it. I’m guessing my resting insulin level is increased meaning I can’t resist picking. Not like the former at all.

Hopefully when I get my meds sorted I’ll be able to do it again.

Wow, thank you for responding. I am still researching and taking advice from people like you that have fasted with Hashimoto’s/Hypothyroidism. I am still a bit skeptical, but curious. I just want to feel better.....

....some evidence that kickstarting bursts can be helpful??🤷‍♀️

I personally would not do that because you might make yourself more ill. This disease is bad enough without stopping food. I think one of the reasons I have Graves' disease is because I am half Irish and the people in Ireland were starving to death years ago because of the potato famine.

Maybe it has to do with it yes

But not to be confused with flash 24 hrs fast as cannot be compared and already have the condition anyway.....the idea is to kickstart and yes you burn a bit of stored fat

Id say generally it may assist some but dont know unless try - not to say you cant take supps

Do you need to lose weight? I have just lost 1 and half stones without even trying because I am in my second remission with Graves' My husband just said your face looks thinner which has worried me so I am trying to eat more at the moment. I do eat as healthy as I can and I avoid sugar and fast foods.

I have just been through a stage of being underactive and bedridden for over 2 years. My GP refused to treat me because my TSH was in range even though my T4 and T3 were very low. In the end I ordered NDT from Thailand and self treated because the NHS would not help me because of guidelines. My TSH is 0.70 now which I think is slightly low but the NHS think otherwise.

I don't think I will because I have had this disease for 12 years or even longer and I know this is my multi-nodular goitre that is causing it. Thanks all the same

Hello

i have had hashis for 20years plus. I took some Ayurvedic advice and it is helping me a lot, being kind to yourself and in tune with nature, I altered what and how much and how I ate. I dont eat from 7pm to 11 am the next day. This is a long enough fast for the body. i eat smaller portions and mostly natural food, not procesed. Cooked to make it easier to digest. I know it has helped me and am continuing to do it and have lost lots of weight. i saw an Ayurvedic doctor. Be gentle and kind to yourself.
