Hello

New here and diagnosed with hypothyroidism just last week. I have been put on l-thyroxin 100 and have repeat bloods on the 21st sept. I live in Germany and although my German is ok this medical speak is hard to manage! I had been feeling tired for a long time and just putting it down to age, kids and working. My cholesterol was also high but he said it could be linked to the thyroid problem. Basically I'm jut looking to connect with others in a similar situation.

Thanks

Raised cholesterol is certainly linked to hypothyroidism. It used to be one of the ways they diagnosed the problem.

I’m surprised you have been started on 100 of thyroxine. Normally it’s 50 a day.

I think it was to do with my weight! I'm 70kg currently and my level was 14.4 , ive not noticed any adverse effects so far, still feel washed out and now that the sun has gone in am feeling the cold again along with the aches and pains.

It certainly takes time and having a larger dose to start with might mean it takes even longer. Just have to plough on. If you feel dreadful at some point I'd cut the tablets and half and do 50 a day for 4 weeks and then try the 100 again. I have to ease any dose changes in or I feel a lot worse. You then start to count your 6 weeks until your next blood test from the point you go back up to the full dose.

Have you been told to return for a retest after 6-8 weeks? We usually start low at 50 mcg to get our body used to it then as it takes 6 weeks for each new dose to get fully into your body we then retest and this process is repeated until you are on the correct dose for you.

We can help you with any results until you get your head around it so please postcany readings you have already and new ones in the future but please remembercyo post the ranges as well. These are very important as they differ from lab to lab so without knowing yours we would just be guessing!

Thyroid Uk who run this site have a very good site with loads of info that will help you but shout out if anything you don't understand.

retest bloods on the 21st sept so 4 weeks after starting - he told me to go and get them straight away so i could start the next day. I think it was only tsh level of 14.4 - I will ask more questions next time.

It's going to be worth you putting a file together to store all your results and correspondence in. Start by ringing your GP surgery and asking for a print out to be made for you to collect of the test just done. Ask that it include the reference ranges for the tests. Then come back on here and post the results for more helpful ideas and keep that paper in your new file.
