Hi

To help you more have you get your blood results including ranges?

We Thyroid patients struggle to lose weight if we are not on the correct dosage of medication?

Dr Peatfield suggests restricting carbohydrates, cutting out sugars.

However, it doesn’t matter how much you cut back it may have a negative affect if we ‘diet’.

If your iron level is low do you take iron supplements?

Best Wishes

Hi

Yes iron tablets can upset your tummy, I can’t take certain one.

Are you on thyroid medication?, if so obtain a copy of your recent blood results from the GP (official copies) post them on here and the experienced members can offer some help on what’s happening.

Best wishes

It’s a cold hard fact we burn on average 200kcal a day less than a non hypothyroid sufferer. That is quite a lot of calories over a week/month/year. I can put on 7lbs in a week if I’m not disciplined. It’s something I’ve had to accept as part of this illness. If I’m strict with my diet (around 1500/1600 per day ) and base it around lots of veg and some low carb fruit plus good fats and protein then I can stay on track. A week off having chips, white bread and generally higher carbs then bang on it goes so quickly too 😀😳

Hypothyroid people gain weight - due to our metabolism being slowed right down when hypothyroid. Metabolism should increase as our dose of levothyroxine is increased - every six weeks until TSH is 1 or lower. Some doctors believe anywhere in the range is o.k. but it isn't.

Stomach problems can occur in hypo because we can have low stomach acid - instead of normal acid - and that gives us symptoms. Many doctors prescribe antacids but we actually need acid to dissolve food and we supplement with Betaine with Pepsin Tablets with meals and I'll give you a link:-

Blood tests for thyroid hormones always have to be at the earliest possible, fasting (you can drink water) and allow a gap of 24hours between last dose of levo and the test and take afterwards. This keeps the TSH at its highest as that's all doctors take notice of and adjust willy/nilly.

Levo should be taken first thing with one full glass of water and wait an hour before eating as food and coffee interfere with the uptake of the hormones.

Some prefer a bedtime dose - in that case a gap of 3 hours between last meal and dose. Miss this dose if having a blood test next a.m. and take afterwards and night dose as usual.

Many people with hypothyroidism find that they benefit from a gluten free diet. We also find that however healthily we eat we can end up low on iron, ferritin (stored iron) vitamin B12, D and Folate. Unless these are up at optimum levels we don't feel well.

Avoid soy - it makes you more hypo - and eat liver once a week, to raise your iron. Apart from that, just eat good, clean food. Plenty of protein and fresh fruit and veg; some good fats (olive oil, coconut oil, butter, animal fat, nuts, etc.) not too much fibre; some carbs; and don't skimp on the salt. Adrenals need salt, and our adrenals are under a great strain when we are hypo. :)

No reason to avoid broccoli. The only food you should avoid is soy.

Maybe you are gluten-sensitive. Try cutting out gluten.

Then don't eat those foods. It's as easy as that.

with no gall bladder your hospital should have told you how to proceed and what foods to avoid, which are usually fried foods, high fat foods and vegetables that cause gas, it will be trial and error to see which ones you can eat with no side effects, hopefully after your removal you started on a liquid clear soup diet and slowly introduced food back into your diet, high fibre foods can cause gas and bloating etc you will just have to see which ones cause you the least problems

I recently discovered I have hashimoto's after battling with my doctor for a full thyroid panel. She has repeatedly insisted we only need to check TSH levels and after my TPO and Thyroglobulin antibodies came back sky high, not a peep from her about it. So my new naturopath just sent me for food sensitivity, hormone, adrenal, and iodine testing. Gluten and dairy are at the top of the no no list for me and since I have changed my diet, my antibodies are coming down. Besides my new diet which consists of a lot of fruit, vegetables, healthy fats like coconut and olive oils, avocados, fish and some meat....no grains, dairy, sugar or soy and bioidentical hormones as I'm post menopausal......I feel amazing! Any negative symptoms I was having before are gone. I should also mention that I was supplementing with zinc, selenium, B12 and vitamin D but then my levels for those started to come back too high except for the D. I believe vitamin D is often overlooked and a critical component that is not obtained enough through diet. Good luck....I find you have to practically be your own physician to get to the bottom of it. Never stop getting your levels of everything tested.....so important!
