Hi please can I have the link re suppressed tsh and high t4 so I can show endo. My go and endo have not been to bad on this journey with me since Jan 2015. After my latest results tsh 0.25 range .34 to 5 and t4 12 range 8 to 18 they are wanting to reduce my dose of levo 75 which I don't feel is necessary?

Sorry, I don't know which article you're referring to, but your TSH isn't suppressed. And your FT4 isn't even mid-range. So, your doctors are totally out of line wanting to reduce your dose.

I agree with greygoose and they have not tested your Free T4 and Free T3. They are only taking account of the blood test results particularly at the TSH, rather than enquiring if you are symptom-free and you feel well and active.

Your test result for T4 shows at 12, whereas the max could be nearer18.

I think you might mean the article written by Dr Toft (leading endocrinologist and past president of the British Thyroid Association) who states in Pulse Magazine,

"The appropriate dose of levothyroxine is that which restores euthyroidism and serum TSH to the lower part of the reference range - 0.2-0.5mU/l.

In this case, free thyroxine is likely to be in the upper part of its reference range or even slightly elevated – 18-22pmol/l. Most patients will feel well in that circumstance.

But some need a higher dose of levothyroxine to suppress serum TSH and then the serum-free T4 concentration will be elevated at around 24-28pmol/l.

This 'exogenous subclinical hyperthyroidism' is not dangerous as long as serum T3 is unequivocally normal – that is, serum total around T3 1.7nmol/l (reference range 1.0-2.2nmol/l)."

You can obtain a copy of the article by emailing Dionne at

print it and highlight question 6 to show your doctor.
