I would say it's absolutely the explanation. You need carbs to convert. If your conversion has decreased, then your FT4 and FT3 could still be in-range, but the FT3 not high enough to make you well - it's low T3 that causes symptoms.

Please, always give the exact numbers - results and ranges. Just telling us that they're in-range, tells us nothing. :)

Hi greygoose,

Thanks for replying to my post yesterday. I have just posted my levels!

This post has made me sit up and think!!! I was diagnosed as .1 over threshold for Diabetes Type 2. I have DRASTICALLY cut carbs out - could this cause problems????

Thanks

Yes. Low carbs, OK, but not too low.

Having said that, I don't know if it's causing YOUR problem, because you never replied to my question asking what your problem was. :)

?? Sorry greygoose. Which question did I miss???

TSH 1 they would not give me the ranges however much i argue .....

Well, the range isn't essential for the TSH. And TSH of 1 is good. But meaningless. Your FT3 could still be very low. Just testing TSH is not good. It doesn't tell you very much at all once you are on thyroid hormone replacement, and should only be used as one of the tools for diagnosis.

By the way, the range is part of the result. If they refuse to give you the range, they are breaking the law. Have you tried telling them that?

in reply to greygoose

No but I will now ! They said it was irrelevant to me only the doctors need to know results ! Luckily I seem ok on my dose this diet just caused a nasty blip , thank you for response .

You're welcome. :)

What arrogance! What they're saying is, you're just a poor, ignorant patient, you can't possibly understand lab results! But, it is your legal right under the 1998 Data Protection Act to have a print-out of YOUR results. They are yours by law. And, as from last Friday, you don't even have to pay for a copy anymore! So, tell them to stick that in their pipes and smoke it!

However, in the UK it your legal right to know your results and they must now be provided at no charge.

I said :

When you say 'thyroid' was slightly high, what exactly does that mean? TSH? The TSH isn't your thyroid, it's a pituitary hormone that doctors believe tells them all they need to know about the thyroid. It doesn't.

Or do you mean your FT4? You see, we always need the exact numbers - results and ranges - or else we're just guessing. We cannot know what is causing your symptoms without knowing what 'thyroid' means, and how high 'slightly' high actually is.

Two questions, no answers. :)

Depending on what you're hoping to achieve on the keto diet, you may have more luck with an Auto-immune paleo (AIP) diet.

I felt awful doing a version of AIP last year, but that's how I discovered I had other nutrient deficiencies.

in reply to Cooper27

Yes i think i will look into paleo ! the keto was for mare energy and some weight loss i need to loose about a stone but no matter how much i exercise i wont shift :) I should add i lost pounds but as soon as i added more carbs i also piled more weight on not good .

Molly1964, I am another hypothyroid person that feels bad on a low carb diet. I now eat quite a bit of fruit, and rice or pasta several times per week.

Many hypothyroid people seem to do very well on it, and it comes up on the forum quite often, usually with positive results.

My suspicion is that it depends exactly where in the processing of thyroid hormones you have impairment, and for some of us we need the access to sugars. Seems like hypos either do really well or really terrible. Not many in between!
