Splitting tablets

Is it OK to split tablets? 125mcg of Levothyroxine is too little and 150mcg is too much. I thought I might take 150mcg three times a week, but it's probably more sensible to split a 25mcg tablet daily if this is an acceptable thing to do. Advice anyone?

Yes no problem splitting levothyroxin, my pill cutter tended to crush bits, so now use craft knife.

I tried to reply to your post yesterday, but seem to be having problems posting replies! I asked you if your different pills were in fact the he same manufacturer?

It's variable depending on what the pharmacist dispenses. Thanks for replying.

I wonder whether that might be part of your problem, different manufacturers. My pharmacist normally gives me Mercury , but then he suddenly switched me to Teva and I found the change made me feel quite odd- he was happy to give me back the Mercury and put on his computer re prescription renewal 'Mercury only'. Other patients had the same problem, it's not so much the levothyroxin dose but fillers and coatings that can work differently for different people. What are the various manufacturers?

I've been doing it for a long time, years ago my GP told me to do this as it would "Save me having to prescribe three strengths of Levo" - at the time I was needing 175mcg so rather than prescribe 100s, 50s and 25s, she prescribed 100s and 50s and I split the 50s.

I keep my half tablet in a small screw top in my bedside cabinet (where my Levo and T3 are kept so I can take them early hours of the morning) and I successfull cut my 50mcg Levo tablet with a "Safe and Sound" pill cutter amazon.co.uk/Safe-Sound-Pil... Mine was cheaper at my local pharmacy.

When I took Levo, I always had a preference for an alternating dose, so in your situation I’d take 150 / 125 alternate days. No waste, it’s long acting and you know exactly what you’re taking. And then the ++++ factor that comes from an alternating dose.

I split a 25 to get a steady daily dose of 112.5 (or as near as I can manage!)

I tried alternating 100 and 125 and felt it just wasn't quite right - for me.
